Bollix to the Vuelta and the Worlds. Seeing Cav in a sprint finish at Sandringham, near my neck of the woods, should be something worth watching :D

I want to see him struggle up the hardest way up Caerphilly Mountain. Preferably, stopping a couple of times for a rest, then resting at the top for a burger and a couple of cigarettes*, because he's deserved it, damn it!

hmm yes- youre right -silly me!

itll be a bit retro for him dodging cars when the rolling road closure breaks down*.

    * i know its probably why theyre avoiding any big cities this year

  • It's not really avoiding any more big cities this year than it has in the last couple of years though!

Be good to see Cav riding at home, would've thought he'd quite enjoy taking a couple of stage wins in front of home crowds.

Or could Cav actually be in bad shape, whether through an illness or something else, and his chance to ride in the Worlds ruined because of that? If he was ill he will have presumably got tests carried out on him. If they do show something it will either be a case of his season ending now, an illness being proven, meaning the UCI would give dispensation to ride elsewhere, or no illness and then he will not be allowed to race.

I saw him climb the Tumble, 2 years ago. Towards the top, he was only just behind the Garmin boys, Millar and Wiggins, who had attacked the bunch.

With Caerphilly Mountain, it's the steepness that's the issue (it's not very long). They're going up the steepest way, which has sections at 20% (according to my Garmin Edge)

According to my Edge gradient thingy, I live on something resembling the Zoncolan. It's about 6%. It's never been accurate for me.

  • He cant be that ill, He's been sunning himself and riding around with David Millar the last few days...

of course he was not ill, he just didn't want to ride for a team that he stabbed in the back. Word is most of the management and the riders have turned on him. Because he is a sociopath, he really does not care anyway.

That's true, for sure. Caerphilly Mountain is properly steep though. A Welsh Mur de Huy (sort of). It will sort out a few riders.

What do you reckon Iain? The use of 'Sociopath' is worth a bonus point, but I didn't feel there was much conviction. As Simon Cowell would say "I didn't believe it".

    Harsh.

Formulaic and pedestrian, but consistent with his earlier works. Reading in the context of the oeuvre we can discern not just the use of the existing memes that are the guiding narrative of cornoyemade's work but the development of new plot devices that are surely introduced at this point to enable a richer monologue to emerge in the future. While there is a temptation to dismiss this post as mere page-filler a deeper reading of the text allows us to see the author building what will surely become the fundamental concepts of his coming posts. While lacking the hyperbole of much of his work we can be sure that this post was necessarily muted, as a precursor to and and amplifier of the joyously splenetic rhetoric we can all look forward to reading soon.

Yes, that's the Sky squad. Isn't Cav still under contract with Highroad, even for ToB?

It will be a bit harsh on the Highroad sprinter otherwise dropped to accomodat Cav, especially if they are still looking for a ride next season.

Think your Garmin may be not quite right, I dont think it is 20% anywhere, more like 12 to 15%. If Cav wishes to get over it to win the stage he is well capable, it is not that hard for pro riders at all. I have seen many races over there years agio and it did not really split things up.
Do you know where it goes from the top? Down the new part towards the garden centre or down past hospital?
I was thinking of going half way up to watch the steepest part, then ride back down to watch the finish behind the castle.

OWM, don't know Caerphilly all that well but I think it is coming down the new section of road. According to the map here http://www.tourofbritain.com/_ns_race/default.asp?section=stage4_route it joins back at the roundabout where the A468 becomes dual carriageway (you can zoom in on the map). I don't reckon there'll be enough time to get from the climb to the finish through the crowds so will just ride up to watch on the climb I think. Can't help feeling it is a wasted stage - the final climb will be a decent test but Storey Arms is just a long drag that they'll do in the big ring. I'm half tempted to go and watch on Dartmoor the next day which gives a better chance to watch in a few places and will be a tougher stage.

The route goes up the mountain passing the wrong way through the one way system in the town , to the top then down the new road to the roundabout then back in to Cresent road at the side of the castle

as for the storey arms climb - its along 10 miles uphill from brecon to that point, but then they turn off over Penderyn so there is a sharp climb, you could see them on Penderyn and then come straight back down A470 to Caerphilly

Cheers, I hadn't picked up on them going the Penderyn way, much nicer road. I've not got a dilemma on whether to drive so that I can watch them there and in Caerphilly or ride and watch them once. Might drive up the Beacons then park up outside Caerphilly to ride the climb - will have to check the schedule. Storey Arms is a long drag but it is only 5 miles or so from Libanus where the climb really starts and even I used to be able to ride it on the big ring but adding the slope up from the reservoir towards Penderyn should spice it up. Surprised the climb out of Newtown isn't classified though, would have thought it would be a second cat as it is long with a reasonable gradient.
