Smart 1 Watt or 1/2 Watt plus some decent rechargeable hybrid batteries.
    More problems but still living....

Or I have the Cateye TL1100 holy hand grenade with the aforementioned rechargeable AA hybrid batteries. Been using it recreationally (ie not commuting) for 3 years in all weathers.

Good visibility due to the extra sideways pointing LEDs, and can have one row of LEDs on constant with the other flashing. Only need to recharge the batts every couple of weeks; YMMV commuting tho.

+2 for the Smart rear lights; had one of the 1/2W as a backup. Smaller but very very bright. Take AAA's Sadly mine got nicked :(

I'm not sure I'd bother with rechargeables for a rear light. They seem to last forever - so much so that I often end up changing them because I simply can't believe they're going to carry on much longer. And since we seem to get all our darkness in one half of the year and I'm commuting 2 hours a day (night?) in the winter, that's no mean feat.

My rear lid-light is rechargeable but it's combined with the front lid-light
