london to brighton off road tyre question

Gents Ive entered the above ,in need of a new set of tyres,currently running smart sams,as it is mostly singletrack,is it worth fitting a smaller tyre?cheers murf.

    I will be doing it with a Conti travel Contact on the rear and something a bit gripper on the front. Currently have an Ardent on but might try something like a Mach SS. Rode the route across the North Downs a few weeks ago it was quite muddy especially the bit down into Shere
