I was given this bike by a friend, it had been badly abused, the chainset was broken, the quill stem siezed, along with the seatpost and BB... So I've given her a new lease of life.
New forks and some overly bling wheels:
Apex gruppo with a 50t ring and bash:
Quite tight on the old clearances!
11-36 cassette and mtb rear mech
Apex and S900 shifter/brake lever

11-36 cassette! Wow.... You could climb Mt Everest...Do not write below this line. Office use only.0

Yeah, the cassette almost gives me the range of a compact with a 11-27 cassette, I lose a little bit (2.8 ratio as opposed to 2.5) but for my commute it is perfect. It also wheelies beautifully!0

Got to say, that's a slightly frankenbike mix of new and old. Either go old-skool with components or go for a newer frame. The halfway house doesn't quite work, IMHO. I'm glad to see you've kept some of the original grti'n'grime on the frame though
Better than letting it go to waste thoughFCN3: Titanium Qoroz.0 -

Not sure about that saddle bag --

Single 50t chainring though. I remember trying to climb some 25% gradients with a 30t on the front (triple) and a 32 on the back with fully laden 12kg panniers... wish I had a 36 to go toFCN 2 to 80 -

You did all that work and didn't even clean the frame?
I rather like it (except for those rims......)Faster than a tent.......0 -
I think you should spray the frame matt black and voila you have something that from a distance looks ok. Each to their own though and I presume this is built to do a job rather than look nice?0
-
I rather like the rusted pitted look, I think it would lose a lot of its charm (to me anyway) if I got it resprayed. It reminds me of fallen gentry, sort of a beat up old gentleman in a very expensive suit... Not to mention that the seatpost is still seized (although it's bang on the right height)
If I did respray it i'd want to find the decals first and just re-do it in the same colour. If I want something fancy to ride then I've always got the caad...0 -

Not with a 50T single chainring you couldn't.___________________________________________

But wearing the world's blingiest trainers.
Mine came to a sticky end in April this year:

Gotta say, I like it. Deeper rims with round tubing definitely works.FCN 2-4.

Any advice for how to remove a stuck seatpost? Aluminium post in a steel frame.0 -

Aluminium expands twice as much as steel when heated, the converse is also true. Freeze the seatpost with a CO2 cannister and it should contract enough to get loose.0 -
^ Genius. Thank you. Much less destructive than a blowtorch....0
-
You ideally want to get it a lot cooler than CO2 decompression. Dry ice or liquid nitrogen tend to work a lot better.
Personally (despite having access to these things) with an aluminum post in a steel frame i tend to just cut it flush with the top of the frame, cut down the inside with a good hacksaw blade tensioned with a spoke and then use the shaft of a flat head screwdriver to chisel a chunk out along the cut line. The rest usually comes out with a bit of BFI0 -
I love Frankenbikes . . . . .
How about a Frankenbike competition?
Price limit 200 quid and if you have stuff "lying around" then there'll be a "going rate" cash equivalent to take into consideration . . . . .
hmmmmmmm?

I can only begin to imagine the amount of fuckwitted, "I can't work out which way round the seat goes" threads this could generate. I'm interested... I have the same frame lying about in the garage. Admittedly with one tube broken.0 -
That Geoff Roberts will sell for more than £100. Nice frame.0

The 456 lefty in my sig was the last frankenbike i built. Almost entirely out of my spares box, cost me less than £200 all in...
