New chainset or rings and BB

Evening all

I have a dilemma. I need a new BB as my hope one is slowly dying after years of faithful service. I also need some new chain rings (standard triple)

I have a set of RF Deus crank which are excellent but is it worth buying the rings and the BB when I can get an RF evolve with all 3 for pretty much the same price. On the other hand I'd be getting a nicer crankset by going for a new Hope BB and some TA rings....?

opinions?

  • Why not just replace the bearings in the Hope BB instead of replacing the whole unit.

Cos by trying to regrease the bearings in situ I ve buggered the lip seals (which has hastened the demise) and them plus the bearings are not far off a decent web price. Good idea you have though Jedi (groan)

I must admit I don't understand the pricing on this.. I have just "binned" a perfectly serviceable M760 XT, because a 770 crankset is cheaper than 3 rings.

I'm rapidly approaching £3-400 a year in wear and tear parts.
    Cassettes 1-2 per year
    Chains 2 per year
    brake pads 3-4 sets
    chainrings 2 once per year.

It can work out economic to buy a whole shimano crankset and just keep the rings and BB, and sell the cranks and bolts...

Excuse me mr "get off your high horse", but you are the one who didn't want Shimano. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones at people, you know.

I don't understand why replacing rings cost as much as a chainset - just buy some cheaper rings, they can be had for next to nothing.

where? I can only find Superstar and they re out of stock

And it's not like Cooldad does nt have previous with "helpful" posts. If I wanted a new drivetrain, i would have asked a question on new drivetrains

@diy - I would hazard a guess that part of the reason is that we are seeing the death of the 9spd drivetrain as companies move to 10spd. I was hoping to find some 9spd stuff cheap but not having much luck so far this week...

That's because 9speed is far from dead. No reason to discount it yet.

Did I miss something here. You don't want Shimano cranks as it won't match the rest of your setup as it SRAM? Don't you already have RaceFace cranks? They are different and already don't match SRAM. Would be different if they were Truvativ.

On 10 speed - it seems' firms are discounting that or even keeping it similar to 'help' the move.

    Good man!

Chunkers - BB is dead and Rings are too big for a Pyrenees trip planned next month - replace with good (i.e expensive) BB and rings or with an SLX/S7/Evolve level crankset...

Yeyha - dying, not dead. Planet-X/On-one were selling off aload of 9spd stuff recently and in general it is more discounted than 10spd. It is fading out but not faded yet

"More discounted" is misguided though. The 10 speed stuff is newer. Newer stuff is invariably more expensive.
