consider something second hand perhaps.. something a year or so old with little wear could be a bargain for that sort of money.

Several people on here have the Voodoo Hoodoo, they seem very happy with it. You can get it from Halfords, worth a look.

Trek 3700 is an awful bike for th money. The Fury blows it away, as does the Hoodoo mentioned above. Also Decathlon Rockrider 8.1.
  • just seen the whistle miwok 1162d for the same price as the fury,so still not sure what to go for[/b]

Fury spec is streets ahead. And could you ride something called miwok? Seriously.

  • I was looking at the Canyon website - nice one in there at your price range. Generally Canyons are getting good reviews.
  • right i think i've got it down to a carrera fury or kraken

    reccomend the VooDoo HooDoo. SNM.
  • you could do what I just did and grab a Spesh Rockhopper in the sale before the new season's models land?

Base model is down to £599 so sitting right at the top (but still within) your budget :)

I went with the one up from that but its one hell of a bike in my humble opinion ;)

I'm sorry to here you slag off the whistle 1162d miwok. It's a very well engineered bike for it's money obvious you have never taken any time to look at one. I was going to get a fury until I rode the miwok and the miwok is a far better bike.

Bit of a thread resurrection, especially as a first post, but an awesome story anyway.
You wouldn't be connected with the company in any way, would you?
Anyway my statements stand. Fury spec is better, and IMHO the name is funny.
If you disagree, how about something specific.

I've looked at one. It isn't in the same league as the Fury. Suntour XCM fork is not a patch on the adjustable Raidon air fork, 8 speed drivetrain vs 10 speed, heavy wheels, and an astonishing all in weight of 14.4kg vs 13.1kg.

Plus the one I got from a company in Preston was £180 difference in price so the sake of a couple off pounds in weight and no air shocks I think it's a far better bike for the entry level rider.

Either its a far better bike, or a better bike for an entry level rider, so which is it?

Spec and weight wise the Fury is leaps ahead and even Carrera outpoints miwok as a name!

The adjustable, hydraulic damping on the fork makes a big difference too. 3lbs weight difference. The Fury is the better bike by far. Both are good at their respective price points, but spec wise the Fury just floors it.

You already said that. You think if you repeat something enough reality as we know it will change?
I'm sure it's a perfectly competent bike and if you are enjoying it that's all that's important.
The name is still funny as well.

  • BTW, Halfords have a 20% promotion on until Monday 3rd for all Carrera bikes.

If you can get one in the right size the white 09 can be had for £419 and the new 2011 version for £479!

Either are decent bikes for the money at those prices
  • +1 on the Spesh Rockhopper, just got mine in the sale, and wish i bought one sooner!

OP I was in exactly your position 4 months ago. I went with a Specialised Hardrock Disc despite people on here telling me it was shit value for money. I thought it's Specialised, it cant be that bad!

Nothing wrong with the bike but straight away I wished I had spent more. I now have a Cube Attention which is awesome, but I've spent £1000 now on two bikes because of a mistake. Could have bought an LTD or something!

The moral? Buy a Carerra Fury or spend £6-700 on a branded bike and don't bother with the likes of the hardrocks and trek 3700 because if you are on a forum like this, they aint gonna hack it for what you want them for!

  • Just seen this thread as I was searching Whistle, I'm no expert, still a noob so not even going to attempt to give any buying advise, just wanted to add to this thread as I love my Miwok, comfortable ride although gear changes feel a little jumpy sometimes and thus far handled everything I have thrown at it, so for noobs on a budget I'd say its worth a look alongside the other suggestions.
