Hi, im taking my 7 year old son along to the local U8 cyclo cross events starting in September, just a couple of questions: do the U8's age cat usually have obstacles and will his bike (see below) do for now to get him started.

The bike isnt as heavy as some kids bikes, tyres are fairly grippy and no suspension.

Cheers.

None of the races Jnr did last season had any obstacles that I can remember, I think they removed all the hurdles from the course (and put them back in for the age groups over 12). Some courses will have some ups and downs which will be tricky for a 7yo, but nothing too bad - some may require pushing the bike up.

The bike will be fine. Although expect him to want something like this for Christmas....

As above I've got a feeling that when I was helping set up the kids course at our event last year we were told that the kids weren't meant to have to dismount and carry their bikes so not to put in any obstacles or steep climbs.

merciano I've seen mandatory mount/dismounts at kids races before, but there's just been a line and a marshal enforcing it, it's just been push and run through, then remount.

Most kids bikes are heavy enough for an adult to carry let alone expecting a kid to carry one.
