Jammed up 105
All right yesss I know this is a highly exploited topic. Shimano 105 Shifter stuck/Jammed
Nonetheless, I have a 2 month old bike with with 105 components - Everything has been great up till about 2 weeks back and ultimately today.
Starting 2 weeks ago I noticed that I was having to sweet talk my left shifter into down shifting to the 2nd front cog from the 3rd. I would have to rock the little down shift lever a few times before it would catch and come down. Well today the left shifter completely locked out. I can not go up or down. I want to say its stuck on the big ring position and I need it to come down.
I tried to fix it by spraying it with WD40 ( I read that was good at freeing them up ) Did not work.
I then undid the cable from the front DR and that did not work.
When I try and rack the down shifter over it pops kinda like its stripped, and the upshift lever is just stuck.
( The cables are ran correctly )
Brakes work!
Too cut to the chase I am figuring this thing is shot, and I do not care to pay the local LBS to tell me its shot. ( I will pay them to put it all back together once I get a new FS if needed ) Not hating on the LBS just do not have money to sling around.
I would like to see what you guys think based on what I have done - does it sound like a dead shifter? If so I am going to take it apart myself and ship to Shimano for what I hope is a warranty replacement.
Thanks in advanced.

Where did you get the bike from?
Get in contact with the place you bought your bike from, tell them the issue, and then let them sort it out. it will cost you £0 as it'll be on warranty.0 -
Yeah, that sounds like the usual fault with those shifters. If it's only 2 months old you should get a new one under warranty.I'm left handed, if that matters.0

I got the bike from Bikesdirect.com, and I am past there 30 day warranty coverage. After that they recommend getting in touch with the components manufacturer.

Not wishing to rub salt into your wound but what possessed you to buy a new bike with only a 30day warrenty? I bought an ex demo bike from a LBS and that came with a years warrenty.
Anyway under the sale of goods act the shifters are not of merchantable quality and you are entitled to a refund or replacement FOC. All your reasonable costs are covered as well so postage, petrol, parking must be refunded as well, keep reciepts.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

I am headed to go dismantle this thing and put the shifter in a box.. I do not think I will be satisfied till the shifter is in the mail or the bike is in the shop..
Its driving me nuts knowing its broke just laying in my car..
Driving me nuts is better than the mad rage that took over me when I realized it was fubared. I was sooo madd! I had 2 big rides planed this weekend.0 -
I don't think a 30-day warranty is legally enforceable by the supplier. I'd expect that you'd be able to argue that the goods are unfit for the purpose for which they were sold etc. etc. as per Sale of Goods Act.- - - - - - - - - -

Ahh good question - Compared to the prices of the amount of bike per cost I could get at a local LBS Vs Online - Online was a the answer. For what I payed for this bike is what the Local LBS was wanting for a bike that came with Tiagra shifters. Their bike that had 105's was around $1500.00.
I unfortunately hit this snag where a LBS warranty would have been nice.0 -
But nevertheless, I take it you all do believe per my explanation that this shifter is shot?
Thanks again0 -
Well I woke up in a better mood. I was amazingly able to fix this issue .
My guess is that the cables were in a bind up around all the bar tape. My cables are all taped up hidden. I loosened the shifter from the bars and it started working. So I found the sweat spot and tighnened it up.
I am glad I fixed this because I was highly bummed .
Thanks all again0 -
So the design of the related Ultegra 6700 10s shifter allows for the possibility of a misfeed of the cable resulting in a real PITA. The retainer at the end of the cable misses the receiver cup and gets pull to the farside/inside the housing. For me other solutions, drilling out the cable routing hole and others didn't appeal.
Not sure this works for 105 or others.
Briefly: My solution involves cutting the cable and feeding it back through the cable routing hole and pulling the retainer head backwards out the feeding side with some pliers. Be sure to have the shifter in lowest gear before attempting to pull as it's less likely to damage the insides. Maybe I lucked out as this worked like a charm. It is a shame that this happens at all. It's an older shifter set so the newer ones probably don't have this issue.
Dunno how to share pics here.. :S
Thanks and good luck you guys!
