On the evening of August 17, 2011, pro cyclist Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) competed in a sprint race vs. a horse ("Othello Bourbon"), driven by Eric Raffin, at Hippodrome de la Malbrande at Les Sables d'Olonne, France. After two initial runs, with each competitor winning one, the decisive race was held, in front of 8,000 spectators.

Not the first pro rider to race against horses. They usually choose trotters rather than flat racers (waiting for the first crosser or mountain biker to take on a steeplechaser!).
A great many years ago a rider for the Ystwyth CC called Dave Hopkins raced the train from Aberystwyth to Pwlheli (must have been early 1970's I think). He won!

This sort of thing is quite common. There's a a criterium in Spain that specializes in it.

And that instead of Voeckler it should have been Tony Gallopin :D
