Evening all, I have recently bought a new carbon road bike to make the most of the new forest where i live! Currently riding around the 15-20 mile mark doing roughly 18-20mph average, there is a vast mixture of hills and quite alot of wind most of the time. I wanted some training advice to help me handle longer distances more efficiently, should i reduce my speed slightly and travel longer distances or mix it up and do a couple of long rides a week? also with regards to over training how often do people recommend training each week? my legs dont feel that fatigued the day after a ride and i feel like i can do more but i dont want to push things! i have to admit i do feel the burn in my legs when cycling though :)

anyway enough with my rant! if anyone reads this who is from the new forest send me a message and maybe when could go for a ride, it would be good to train with a group or partner occasionally!

Cheers - Josh

18 - 20mph is quite a good speed for someone just starting out. Well done. The only training I know for riding longer distances is to ride longer distances, working up to it. Ease off the speed and do 30 - 50 miles a couple of times a week at, say 17 - 18mph - that shoiuld be well within your capability. I recommend joining a club and going out on club runs - depending on the club anything between 40 and 100 miles. It's easier to ride in a group, and you'll get tips from the experienced roadies in the club. As for over-training, I doubt you're in danger of that at the moment, but mix shorter with longer rides and more intense ones with easier ones. You're more in danger of over-training if you flog yourself everyday with no rest days or easy days. In order for training to have an effect you need to go through regular recovery.

18-20mph avg? I have just started a month ago and im avg 13-14mph though I do live in Cornwall with lots of hills, but damn I feel like im well sh*t now :) thanks!!!
  • I think having a specific target will help with training eg I want to ride 100 miles in a day before the end of September or I want to be able to get up some nastysteep local climb in only 2 mins etc. Just a thought.

+1 except I don't live in Cornwall. I'm just slow.
The only disability in life is a poor attitude.

this makes me feel better, though I can do 30 miles with no problems, maybe cos im taking it 'easy'
  • thanks for all the replies and advice! i dont want to dwell too much on average speed as i realise its only an average and theres lots of variables to consider, but yes i usually average 18-20 over the course of the ride, normally do 20miles in around 60 mins pretty much spot on, mixture of hills/flats but and normally a fair ammount of wind. But like i said im aiming to go for a 30mile ride or go for 25 next and work up.

i think like people have said i need to spend more time in the saddle and rack up some miles, going to go for a long one tomorrow morning, i shall report back on my distance and times! i think sometimes i can be too competitive with myself and need to just enjoy the rides more seeming as im starting out, getting used to the clipless pedals has been strange, not to mention forgetting to unclip at the traffic lights and falling off! haha

im glad im doing ok though for a beginner just got to keep it up and get out training i guess! does anyone on here use the gym for leg strength training? as i regulary use the gym anyway so may incorporate some more leg training into my routine
