2012 SLX brake issues

I recently purchased a set of the new 2012 SLX brakes with the cooling fins attached to the pads etc. I've been running them for about a month and I can only describe them as fierce. However, I had noticed that the power of the brakes had recently started to reduce with time until this morning when I used the rear to find little to no stopping ability. (no change in bite point etc so don't need a bleed) I checked the pads and there still seemed to be plenty of life in them but upon removal the pad surface was completely black and covered with oil, dirt, forest, weasels, small children etc. What appears to be happening is the cooling fins seem to be sucking in any detritous from the surrounding and directing it towards the braking surface. Is this a problem others have found? This isn't an artifact of cleaning my bike either as on this occasion my bike hadn't been cleaned between rides. On the positive side cleaning the pads with a dry tissue until no further surface grime came off (4 tissues worth) restored full braking power. Is this going to have to become part of my bike cleaning ritual in future?
