Qualifying fathers (as defined in law based on tenure in post and other criteria) are entitled to two weeks paternity leave to be taken within 56 days of the date of birth. 'Stautory paternity leave' may be taken as either individual weeks or in a single block. it may be taken in conjunction with other leave entitlements in line with your employer's policies.

Qualifying fathers may take "additional paternity leave" of up to 26 weeks at any time within the period beginning 20 weeks after the child is born (or adopted) and ending 12 months after that date, providing the mother has returned to work. Additional paternity leave is paid at a set rate of around £130 per week.

Paternity rules cover both child birth and adoption.
