My work is due to be running the cycle to work scheme shortly and i've been thinking about getting a fixie/singlespeed road bike ideally one with a flip flop hub. This will be bike number 3 so not looking to spend a massive amount on it and it will be used for commuting. £300-400 max. Obviously bike needs to be new and the supplier is halfords although they will source any bike (there will be an online database to check).

Any advice or recommendations welcome.

Cheers

Biggles

On One Pompino. You can get the Pompino Urban at the moment for £399 - comes with horrible seat/seatpost combo and flat bars, but could easily and cheaply be converted to road bars (which is what I'm doing, but I have all the bits I need for the conversion already).
    More problems but still living....

I had one ordered for the cycle to work scheme at work and when i got the quote through, i went to put it in and found out that the scheme for my work had ended 2 days before....absolutely gutted, but the bike is still a very nice one. Flip/flop hub, nice racing green and cream colour and each time i called the guys at the cycle shop they were excellent with me (even when i had to cancel my order)....really can't say enough good things about them

£324.99 is well within budget too
  • does your supplier have to be Halfords? Loads of bike shops do all the different schemes if you ask them

It's a nice bike, but I would argue 42x16 (68 gear inches) is slightly on the low side.

Better slightly low than too high ? You can always change that at a later date ?

I had a similar choice last year and went for a Kona Paddy Waggon which I got for £350.

    Very happy with it.

42x16 is fine. I keep up on steady club runs with roadies (box hill etc).

All City Big Block is available through the Halfords Scheme - bit more expensive but the butted tubing gives it a more lively ride.
Presently trying to justify to myself joining the scheme to get one!
FWIW I sold my Pompino because it was a bit of a hefty lump and couldn't say I enjoyed riding it in comparison to a decent steel frame - might be OK for a heavier rider. My other 'fixed' bike uses a full carbon sub-1kg race frame, so perhaps anything else feels sluggish in comparison?
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

not at all, i run 67 GI and can top out at 32mph on a flat and 101 RPM averages 20.0mph

scottland is full of hills, i'd rather spin out on the way down then struggle on the way up
