my last two have had 6 and tbh I find myself actually using maybe 4 of them, the car before the one I have I could quite easily just use 2nd, 4th and 6th
depends on the engine I suppose but that sounds a bit much to meWhether you're a king or a little street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper.

It's just remembering to use them all, so often I'm chugging along doing 90 I men 67 on the motorway and realise I'm in 5th not 6th. Worst is when I've slowed down and changed down then hit resume on the cruise control0

This all sounds too technical for me, 16V engines, catalytic converters and twin overhead cam's are as modern as I'm doing0

9 is quite a lot. But most cars I've driven could do with a proper super-high cruising ratio, swapping between my old Focus and my dad's newer 6-speed one I was surprised that the top gear is more or less the same (ie still too low), they just closed up the ratios a bit. So my car could do with a 6th and his could use a 7th. Then they'd probably screw that up too.Uncompromising extremist0

Don't gearboxes get pretty heavy (as well as costly) when you are up to that number of gears? 6 forward gears seem OK as long as the car's got a decent amount & spread of torque."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0

Didn't even know until recently that cars had more than 5 plus a reverse.
My bike has 6 although 6th is more of an overdrive0 -
