Pinch bolts

I know this is a noob question, but are there any tips for tightening up cable pinch bolts without excessively fraying the cable or braking its filaments? I did up the cable pinch bolt on my new Acera V-brakes to Shimano's recommended torque and still split a filament on the (new) cable. I think I may just be clamping and unclamping the bolt too many times as I fumble around trying to get things tuned...

  • Yup, re-doing and re-tightening can cause split ends.

    Steps:
    1) Fit new cable and clamp lightly.
    2) Cut to length
    3) Dab of Super glue on end of inner (not recommended by manufacturers)
    4) Fit anti-fray end cap securely, err but don't squish
    5) Adjust cable 'tension' - try to get it right first time, hard on a front mech but bleh
    6) Tighten clamp bolt to specc'd torque
