SRAM X9 Rear Derailleur Indexing problem

Hi, I have a Canyon XC7 with 10 speed X9. When out riding the other day the gear changing started playing up so for the last few days Ive been trying to set up the rear indexing.

When changing from high gear thru to low the indexing seems ok, but when I then go to change back to the second largest cog the first click at the shifter does nothing. Subsequent clicks drop the chain back thru the cogs down to third highest gear at which point the last click misses out the second highest gear and drops straight to the smallest cog. So coming back up the gears the indexing seems to be out by one step.

Ive changed the mech hanger but thats made no difference.

Any ideas what could be causing the problem? Bent derailleur cage? Sticking cable?

Cheers for any help.

  • Combo of the shifter/derailleur tolerances.

Took a cable change and a good hour of setup to sort mine, and I know i'm not the only one that has had problems.

the SRAM X9 10sp stuff is complete trash. (sorry but it is).

What is the rest of your setup? Numbers if poss as it's been known for people ti mix speeds and brands.

Something does not make sense, if you shifter is not up the spout.

Making sure everything is clean and well routed and indexed to all the gears perfectly moving up the block to tge biggest cog. First after numbers/ models
  • It's all X9 10 speed throughout, 2011 year model I assume as I got the bike a few months back. Came like that on the bike, not changed anything out.

Shifter seems a lot stiffer to use than the 9 speed X5 on my Carrera Fury.

Check the cabling runs nice and smooth.
  • Thanks guys. Was the gear cable. Must have been the soaking it got at Coed Y Brenin last week. Cable changed and all running smoothly now.
