Rear Light + Aero Seatpost?!

Hey guys,

I ride a 2010 TCR Advanced with an aero style seatpost. I am in need of a rear light for the upcoming autumn and can't find any that will work with my post. Any advice? If any fellow TCR owners could help that would be insane.

I made a bracket out of some steel strip, drilled and bent to shape for use on my TT bike that has an aero seat post. I secured it to the seat clamp bolt with a nyloc nut(there was a fair amount of thread showing through the seat clamp)

I use an exposure flash light - it has a stretchy band that will fit round really quite wide aero posts. A lot of time triallers use them. They are seriously bright!

i got a front boomer and a rear skink, so can use on my road bike without having to fit mounting brackets, at the time the cheapest place to buy was on amazon

I'll probably go for the Fizik one as I have a Fizik saddle. I've looked at a couple of reviews on CRC and they're not the best apparently, but should do the job.

I have one of those Fizik saddle lights and I wouldn't recommend them if it's to be your only rear light. In my view they're simply not good enough to be a main rear light, they should only be used as a backup light.

Hi Anthony,

I had the exact same problem as you and spent a lot of time getting to what I think is a perfect solution!

I use a combination of:

Cateye TL-LD610 5 LED Rear Light

Cateye SP MODEL Flex Tight Bracket 12-32mm SP-11 Model

The flex tight bracket fits perfectly around the Giant aero seatpost and has a soft rubber insert that moulds perfectly to it. As an extra precaution, I wrapped a narrow strip of insulating tape around the seatpost to protect it.

The result is brilliant - a nice bright light (don't both with the Fizik ICS light - it's useless!) that fits well with the profile of the seatpost:

I bought the Fizik one, to be truthful it's rubbish, not very bright, high battery usage and if you use a Fizik bag then you can't use it.

Normally I use old bar tape to pad out the fitment on the seat stay, but it is not always possible, so I just use a clip on light that fits on my back pocket, simple and works perfect.

...what I came up with with an aero post and still do is mount it horizontally on the back of the saddle rails where they come up at 45 degrees.... just a couple of cable ties straight round the light itself, one either side of it about one led in on each side... tighten the cable ties right and you end up with a light mounted right under the saddle.

Not so good if you have a jacket that trails down and blocks it but I dont.

And mount is so the button's underneath to turn it on and off.

Looks smart too doing it that way, like I say though, long jacket makes it a bit of a no-no.

Like this..... (if Id been arsed to I could have hidden the cable tie ends round the back, but I couldnt be)

If you get a Fizik saddle you can get a light that clips onto the saddle instead (which is probably more aero too ).

This is my bracket adapted to fit my Aero seat post. I moulded it using a product called "Premo Sculpy". It is a mouldable hobby clay, although it's nothing like clay, it sets like a hard rubber and is absolutely perfect for the job!!!. It's incredibly easy to use, make the shape req'd then put it in the oven for 20mins at 120º. It comes out rubbery and flexible, this enables you to get the fit just right before it cools and hardens. It is so easy, and perfect!!!!
I bought the mouldable clay at my local Hobby Craft store.

That might be just the thing I need. I ended up getting a Giant Numen TL 3, and the seatpost adaptor to go with it (it's a rubbish picture - the angle is on the side you can't see).

Mounts very nicely, but annoyingly the light, which has no angle adjustment, then points down a bit, rather than up a bit, thus reducing the brightness from the eye level of a car driver.

What I need is something to pack the angle part of the mount, to raise the bottom away from the seatpost a little and hence tip the light up a little.

That sculpting polymer might do the trick. Thanks.

That looks tidy!! I use a small saddle pack which would obscure the light there, so i had to go for the seat post option. Good lights them Flare's !!!!!!!!
