Splitting an old Chain

I've been given a friends bike for a bit of a repair - problems changing gear etc, and its pretty obvious that the old dry slightly rusty chain will not be helping things.
Bike is i guess around 8 yrs old, 27 speed with Suntour derailleur.
I'd like to take the chain off to give it a good clean, but can't find any sort of split link in it (or any sort of manufacturers reference number)
Any ideas on how to proceed ?
I've got all the tools necessary for splitting and replacing it, what i'd like to know is if there is one particular link/rivet i should be looking to break ?
The last thing i want to do is knacker the chain removing it because it might be difficult to find a replacement, or if i replace it might then have probs if i dont change old cassette etc..

Every time I go out, I think I'm being checked out, faceless people watching on a TV screen.....

split it and use a power/split link to re join.
