Does a new chain bed in?

Hi all,
Just changed my chain, cassette and chain rings.
The new chain makes a kind of crunching, almost stretching noise under pressure. It sounds as though it is not sitting quite right on the cassette.
This is the first time I have changed the chain but when I first got the bike it also made this noise. I thought I had sorted it with the old chain by indexing. However I have re-indexed both derailleurs and the noise remains.
Does a chain settle in or should this be rectified?
I've done all the usual drivetrain checks, tightened the cassette, chain bolts, lubed everything etc.
There is no chain suck and it runs fine when spinning backwards.
The noise is bothering me especially as I had it once before, thought I knew how to fix it but haven't been able to this time.
KMC chain by the way, SRAM cassette.
So in short, and as asked in the title, does a chain need to bed in?
Thanks for any advice.
Dave.

    KMC X9 and SRAM PG 950 9 speed 11-34.
They replaced another x9 but a deore cassette.
Being the same chain is what led me to think it might be a settling in problem as my other new x9 made exactly the same noise.
