Based on advice here http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=17149348 I have been looking online for possible replacement parts. So far I've found at least 3 different Shimano chains which are compatible, but I have no idea what the differences are.

Can anyone explain the differences between HG40, HG50 & HG70, or even better tell me where I can find this info for myself?

but of the three the higher the number the "better" the chain

but any "geared" chain that is not 9 or 10spd will work.

  • Thanks for the link. I had looked there before, but did have another look this time.

Am I right in saying that the number is referring to the groupset then? If so, can I mix and match numbers?

For example, The only replacement cassette that I've found with the ratios I want is a HG30. As stated above I've found 3 chains, but they are all higher numbers. What is the most suitable chain for me and why? The Shimano site doesn't really explain what the differences are.

you can use any chain form any maker as long as the speed is correct. Shimano dont really do Groupset chains as they have them covering a number of differing groups. and there is often more than one assigned to a single group.

    differences. finish and cost.
