Shimano chain differences?

Based on advice here http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=17149348 I have been looking online for possible replacement parts. So far I've found at least 3 different Shimano chains which are compatible, but I have no idea what the differences are.
Can anyone explain the differences between HG40, HG50 & HG70, or even better tell me where I can find this info for myself?

but of the three the higher the number the "better" the chain
but any "geared" chain that is not 9 or 10spd will work."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for the link. I had looked there before, but did have another look this time.
Am I right in saying that the number is referring to the groupset then? If so, can I mix and match numbers?
For example, The only replacement cassette that I've found with the ratios I want is a HG30. As stated above I've found 3 chains, but they are all higher numbers. What is the most suitable chain for me and why? The Shimano site doesn't really explain what the differences are.0 -
you can use any chain form any maker as long as the speed is correct. Shimano dont really do Groupset chains as they have them covering a number of differing groups. and there is often more than one assigned to a single group.
differences. finish and cost."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
