Planet X are out of stock of the headset that fits the Nanolight Hi Mod frame. They don't know when they will next get stock as there are problems with the supplier. I need a new one asap.

The headset is a 1 1/8" top and 1 1/2" bottom
Info from PX:-
Bottom bearing,
51.5x40x7
Top bearing
PT-R480 81.8x8x45

Can anyone advise on any other manufacturers and/or suppliers of this particular type of headset?

Thanks,

Did you manage to find a suitable headset? Planet X are still out of stock of the Nanolight headset and a quick Google has failed to turn up anything with those exact dimensions.

Pretty sure PX (and On One) use the Campag/Italian integrated headset standards (with the 45 deg taper bearings) for most of their frames.

You would need to check with PX, but I think it would be the same as fitted to the equiv Ribbles:

e.g. like what is fitted to:

I think the bottom bearing is the same as the bearing in the Ribble Stealth headset, but I'm not sure about the top one. I've emailed Ribble, but I won't hold my breath for a reply.

I really hate headsets... so many different versions compared to a few (or many!) years ago.

Both of my bikes (PX and Commencal) use the less popular Campag fitment as well as by the look of it most of the Ribbles.

What I find odd is that there is so little information on headsets on their product support pages, yet I see so many questions asking about headset fitments - it's like the companies who sell these bikes have no idea of the headaches that this causes.

  • I have made the sensible decision to stay away from any frame which fits integrated headsets... that pretty much rules out carbon and alloy as a whole... :D

I love drop fitment integrated headsets, well when I can find the right replacement bearings/headsets.

I managed to swap a headset on my MTB in about 10 mins with just an "allen key"; it's just a shame it took me about 8 hrs of researching to buy the correct headset

I got a reply from Ribble saying they have no idea of the dimensions of their headset bearings (don't all sealed bearings have the size stamped on them somewhere?) and that it only works in their Stealth frame. Bloody annoying since I know the bottom bearing is what I need. Buffoons.

Just to confirm, are you looking for a headset/bearings for the Ribble Stealth or the PX Nanolight?

For my Nanolight. If I was looking for a headset for a Ribble Stealth I'd just buy the Ribble Slealth headset from Ribble!

Sorry I had to ask, since I assumed that it was for the Nanolight - but you asked Ribble about the Stealth.

Did PX not give you any hints about the Nanolight headset? (asking for the S.H.I.S name)

    Does this help:
    http://www.canecreek.com/tech-headsets?view=standards
    http://www.canecreek.com/manuals/Standa ... System.pdf

The "Campy/Campag" headset standards are listed as "Italian" within the Cane Creek documents, although the document doesn't appear to have a 1 1/2" Italian standard, although you can find then at: http://www.strummer-bikes.com

    Any help?

  • I also could do with a new one for my Nanolight. looking on the PX site i can't really see a difference between the Nanolight headset & the regular PX stock headset. Has anyone asked them before i give em a call?

The Nanolight headset is 1 and 1/8" top and 1 and 1/2" bottom. The standard headset for the Team Alu and SL Pro is 1 and 1/8" top and bottom.

I've emailed Planet X, but they haven't replied (which IME is unusual because they're usually pretty quick). I've had a look at the Cane Creek website and that one you linked to, but I don't know enough to be sure of which one to buy. Pretty frustrating that it's such a challenge just to replace bearings in a headset.

Planet X will not be getting any more headsets for the Nanolight frame and have yet to suggest an alternative. Something to bear in mind for anyone thinking about buying a Nanolight.....

So Planet X have got back to me and suggested I try to track down replacement bearings from a specialist since the bearings are 'standard'. I don't think they are actually, but anyway it's disappointing that they're effectively washing their hands of frames that they still sell.

Ribble have come up trumps though. Someone has checked the bearing size and the top one is 41.8x8x45. The bottom one is 51.5x40x7. Now, assuming that the sizes in the OP should read 41.8 instead of 81.8 (which makes no sense as a headset bearing dimension) then it looks like the Ribble Stealth headset bearings will fit a Nanolight.

I'm going to pop the bearings out of my Nanolight later just to confirm that they are what Planet X have said they are.

  • Just got myself a Planet X nanolight frame which should have come with a headset, It didn't. Got back to Planet X and they said they would get one in the post.. didn't sound convincing as they show they are out of stock.
So ordered the Ribble Stealth and fitted it today... Fits lovely. So in case anyone is looking for a replacement etc for a planet x nanolight go for the Ribble Stealth fits with no issues.

Thanks for confirming that. I'd checked the bearings on my Nanolight and they matched the Ribble Stealth one so I was pretty sure it'd fit.
