SE London Loop - 30-40miles?

I live in Charlton and am looking for some inspiration for a training loop(s) of around 30-40 miles.

I commute into the City every day but most of my weekend riding since moving into London has been with the Wife on the tandem. She is currently occupied with the important business of reproducing so those have stopped and I am looking for some short-sharp rides I can squeeze in on a Saturday morning.

Do any of you guys know the area and have any recommendations?

  • It'll be a slow run for you but there's a sky ride local from Lewisham this Sunday out to the North Downs about 30 miles.

There are probably many more potential routes, join the ride on the Sunday, do it fast the following Saturday then learn a new route on the Sunday, repeat until bored/exhausted/told off by the wife...

    Thanks guys.

Sevenoaks and back does look like a good fit. Tempting to stop before going down the side of that hill though. :)

The dulwich paragon Saturday ride is a nice little loop from crystal palace and back, round biggin hill.

Some climbing and fast stretches of quiet road, I do it quite frequently.

Hang on i think I have a link to it.

I got a few you could do. I ride out from Bexley and I work in Charlton.

    1 evening a week I ride Charlton-Welling-bexley-Swanley-crockenhill-Farningham-Horton Kirby-Swanley Village- Wilmington-bexley

    Route here:

Thanks for the inspiration. For the last two weekends I have been out on this:

Star Hill in the middle certainly gets the heart working.

That's the one I thought of.

The fast Sat morning group tends to extend this by heading out along Pilgrims Way and then up Star Hill and then rejoining this route further on. Makes the ride more like 35-40 miles as opposed to the 30ish miles of the standard Sat run...

Hi, I also live in Charlton (top of Charlton Church Lane) and do lots of rides out into Kent.

My standard training ride is this
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/110274547

It is a little longer than you are looking for but takes in 4 decent climbs and goes through some nice countryside. If you want a little less you can hop across from the top of Toys hill to the top of Ide Hill taking out 4 miles and 1 climb.

For a shorter run I do this:
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/84198234

Again it gets out beyond the M25 and into the country. Only one climb coming back over Shooters Hill

I tend to go out early on a Sunday morning if you want to tag along sometime?

Nice routes! The first one looks a bit more brutal than I had in mind but that almost certainly indicates a deficiency in HTFU. :)

It would be great to join you! Though, from the look of that list of Cols, you are much(much!) more climbing fit than I am so I am afraid I will probably wreck your average times.

I will send you a PM

Can you just turn up for these? What's the etiquette?

Also have a look at my club:

Sorry for going off topic but what's Bigfoot CC like? I live a 10/15 minute ride from the shop (between Beckenham and Bromley) and had considered asking about joining. Though my fitness/riding confidence is stopping me.

Somewhat on topic, the ride through Downe, then around near Tatsfield linked above is one I did for the first time last Sunday afternoon. Really enjoyed it. It's the GoSkyride route.

I think so. I've not been out with them, just nick their routes but I hear the club is very big now and I think go from Herne hill velodrome. Have a look on the dulwich paragon website.

Rides for all sorts of levels every Saturday. No-one is dropped ever. I'd say there is about 50-80 riders out which split into 5 levels. Level 1 is slowest 5 are the racers.

Guide on the website is about right as for the speeds maintained.

It's a great club very friendly and growing fast. Signed 250th member last week!

Funny how these things escalate. :)

Did this early on Saturday morning with Butterd2 and two other riders:

An option if you are looking for something around 60miles from the SE of London.

The climbs were a bit of a push for sure and my legs were threatening to cramp by the end but it felt good and the cafe at the top of Shooters Hill makes a great spot for a cuppa and cake.
