Does anybody know of a decent hill in or near York to practice climbing on? Ideally within a 20 minute ride of the city.

Thanks

  • It is again maybe a little more than 20 mins, but depending on what side of york you're coming from there are loads of good hills around nunburnholme.
If I use that I ride up it, take a left at the top, loop back round, and climb it again, it's a little nicer than going bottom top bottom top. Can get a little circuit going and take lap times etc.

Head north through the Vale of York and onto the area around Helmsley, Thirsk, Gilling etc. Now there's nothing massive out there, but there are a few testers and the scenery is lovely.

I was up there the other month and managed to squeeze in a few miles:

Like I said; no Cols, but certainly a few Dennis Wises!

EDIT: Garmin data now set to 'public' so anyone wishing to see it, can! D'oh.

  • Nice to hear from someone else in the York area!.

Head to Bishop Wilton and take Worsendale Road which will eventually bring you out at the top of Garrowby Hill on the A166. From the data Map My Ride collects it shows this as a category 4 climb. From the top turn right along the A166 for around 300 metres then take the first right which takes you on a long blast back down into Pocklington.

Nearby there's also a slightly easier climb up Givendale Lane to Great Givendale.

I'm also keen to hear of any other decent hills people can suggest, keep em coming please.

+ 1 Garrowby hill A166 After Pocklington towards Brid.

When I first got to Full Sutton nick many years ago I gave it the billy big boll#cks about being some kind of cycling god. A guy I worked with said ok come out with me on a lunch time (we only had a hour and it takes 5 minutes each way to get in and out Full Sutton nick)

45 minutes in we reach the top of Garrowby hill and I m saying Chris Shouldnt we be heading back mate? Back ? I live in Brid I m on an early shift mate I m going home!

Luckily he'd prepped the boss, Needless to say I never gave it the big again and I ve never decscended as quick since.

Cheers Hawkeye (You know who you are )

I would not bother with Garrowby hill, I'd instead use the climb that comes right onto it (also used for hill climb events), it's called Worsendale rd I believe, search it on google maps easy to find.

Or just go do bulmer bank a few times lol

Look at the elevation profile on that, see the climb that goes onto the road just after the the Garrowby hill.

That's a good one to train on.
  • Don't think there are any real hills within 20 mins of York. I used to sprint up the "hill" on the university cycle track on the fixie. Not very long or steep but enough to get a good workout if you do it a few times.

Depends on what you think is a good climb to train on.
Basically the upland of the wolds goes from Bridlington across to Pocklington, and there are hundreds of climbs in that area. They range between long drags at 1-4% like the Thixendale valley road, to the wall that is the bottom of Hanging Grimston (my GPS measured steepest gradient at 37%). There is something around there for all levels or training needs.
If you're strapped for time, get the train to Malton, then pick any road going south, and that will give you a long steady climb. You can then pick a few climbs, and finish with a long spin across the plain back into York.
Personally I'd go over Towthorpe, to Fimber, up through Thixendale, drop into Leavening and then head back round the top of Stamford Bridge. But then I like my hills long rather than steep.

  • How did you get on Pickle Lily?

Following on from the original question, can anyone point me in the right direction of the best hills around Pocklington/The Wolds to hit top speed coming back down please? I suggested Worsendale Road for a hill worthy of climbing practice but the road is narrow with limited visibility ahead and the surface is bumpy in places as well as having some gritty/gravel patches that mean I can't fully open the taps on the way back down. I've tried both Beacon Road and The Bence in recent weeks and they're good fun but I'm sure there's some nice straight and steep tarmac that I'm missing nearby.

Bit gentle is Thixendale. The fun ones are further North!

EDIT - bah! Ignore me! I was muddling my Thixendale with Millington!

I think that that one is Garrowby! Much better condition than the little roads, much wider and there is even an escape road incase you go supersonic! Just wait for a quiet period.

  • Rolf F, which hills/roads are you referring to further north please?

Sorry - I was talking crap. For some reason I muddled Thixendale with Millington. Yep - Thixendale is where I was thinking of - all around there. Take a look at the Grimpeurs de Wolds route plan.

I think the climb up through Hanging Grimston is particularly nice. When you'd done that, you can go back down the hill and then up Uncleby Hill.

  • Thanks for the pointer to the Big G. I've copied the route onto I Map My Ride so I can follow it on my iphone while i'm out. The elevation profile looks pretty heavy going!!

Depends on how good your climbing is but it isn't too bad! The climbs, though fairly steep in places, aren't that long (if you want vicious climbs, head to the North Yorks Moors). I've done the route twice plus one or two of the climbs in the opposite direction and really like it. The boring bit of the Big G is the flat bit out towards Stamford Bridge and back towards Millington.

If you go there after rain though, make sure your tyres have good puncture protection - you get a lot of flinty chalk washed across the roads.

  • Wow... loads of ideas now!

As for an update, I ended up having to work away at the weekend just gone, so haven't had the chance to check out any of the suggestions yet.

Try either Bulmer or Terrington bank, both near Sherif Hutten. Enjoy
