Something different. Something 2nd hand - always the way at this price point.
Those two options remind me of my friend's butler, Hobson.Ben

Everyone has an opinion on what bike is best but it comes down to personal preference and need. Generally the more you you spend the lighter the bike and its component parts which for a road bike is a primary consideration.
For general riding - commute, sportive, fitness then comfort is important ensuring the bike fits your size and shape.
Knowing what you want the bike for may help people give you advice. I would concur with Ben that 2nd hand is always a good way of finding the best value for money - so many bikes out there that have hardly been ridden - seemed like a good idea at the time but either can't make the time to ride or find cycling isn't the thing for them.
If you can I would recommend at the price point you are at looking for a second hand aluminium frame with carbon forks, tiagra gears if poss. If new is your preference then either of the bikes you have listed are good to get you started.
