quick release and clicking

ok so today i went out on a bike ride and every so often there is this clicking noise and it only seems to happen when something changes, road surface or standing up on the pedals etc. i cant find where this noise is coming from so when i got home i tryed taking the wheel of but i couldnt see anything wrong so i put it back on and i lifted up the front end a little and dropped it and the quick release now rattles when i do so! has anyone had this problem before or know how to fix it?
