Looking at a winter hack, I have been offered an amazing deal on a Ultegra Uncle John Cyclo-x

The thing that puts me off is lack of disk brakes, can these be retro fitted to this frame ? I'd be happy enought with just a rear TBH.

The frame apparently has a disc mount, or at least the one in this review:

    does.

The fork doesn't seem to, however. So you might need to swap that to fit discs at both ends.

You would have to also get some new wheels or hubs though, normal brakes will be fine, even in the rain with a set of decent set of rim brakes with decent pads you can easily lock both wheels with no problem

    I have to agree!

Have tried both, much prefer rim brakes, mainly for their ease of adjustment. Have always found disc brakes to be a pain in the arse. ie. getting them not to 'rub' unless you have decent set of disc brakes can be difficult.

Rim brakes are perfectly usable in the wet, just get some decent pads (ie Koolstops).

BTW Gaz, exactly how many bikes does one man need ?!?

Talk to me more about these Koolstops then, the Uncle Johns braking felt WEAK on the "Dry" Test ride TBH

Just fitted these to my langster.

    Superb, in my opinion.

Out of curiousity, cable or hydraulic discs?

My observation has been that people that found discs to be a pain were using cable discs.

My own experience with my hydraulic Avid Elixirs is that I haven't had to touch them in two years, bar popping out the pads and putting in a fresh set, which is something I wish I could say of my rim-brake equipped bikes.

Re the Koolstops, don't you need CX/MTB brake specific pads rather than the road pads? I *think* you can use the MTB Koolstops for the Cantis.

    Were they cantilever brakes?

Yup. They're about as useful as a chocolate teapot,

    Yeah Cantis

So, how can I get braking that actually feels like it will stop me ? The pads ? or something more redical ?

Better pads help, and some canti brakes are better than others from what I've read. Check on the "What you've just bought" thread and SimonAH's mention of the brakes on the CAAD X 105. It's within the last few days.
