Wondering if anyone has experience of this?
I have two bikes - "best bike' has a compact 50/34 with a 12-25, 2nd training/wet bike has a double 53/39 with a 12-25.
Every time i hit the training bike, it feels better in the sense that the power transfer seems better, average speeds are higher, only issue is i haven't got a bail out gear for some of the bigger climbs round here (birmingham/clent way), but still manage to slog through them.
I still push the 'best bike' hard, but it never feels quite as direct in terms of power transfer as the other bike, and I think i might mentally ride this bike differently as i know there are lower gears to jump to if i need them (granted, that may seem odd!)
Wet bike runs a Campag ultra torque crank, best bike runs a standard square bb Campag.
So, just wondered if
a/ is it the UT Chainset that feels stronger/ is better
b/ is this just a placebo effect of riding bigger rings that makes you work harder?
c/ Does a double just suit some people better than others?

Unless both bike are the same in every other respect, I'd suspect it's down to a lot more than just the chainset.
That said, I prefer using a big/big combination than small/small for the same gear in inches.
Probably the best way to answer your questions would be to swap over the chainsets for a while and see how you get on.
