  • I just mix lucozade sport with water half and half. Works a treat

I do the same or sometimes use proper lucozade not the sporty one as its cheaper in big bottles.

i mix 60g of maltodextrin with 750ml of water.
    maltodextrin is pretty cheap:
    http://www.myprotein.com/uk/products/maltodextrin
    and its almost flavourless.

drinking 1g of carbs per kg of body weight each hour you ride
gets recommended a lot for serious cyclists, but i find one 750ml
bottle with maltodextrin and one plain water is enough for me
    for 3 or 4 hours.

you can find more sophisticated recipes on the web with fructose
and electrolyte salts as well. jibbering.com used to have some,
    but seems down right now.

    hth,

Maltodextrin + fructose + electrolytes + diluting juice = energy drink. Buy the stuff from Myprotein and it's cheap as chips.
    More problems but still living....

I'd been buying High5 4:1, but it's expensive (£25 for 1.6kg). So now use maltodextrin & protein from Myprotein, and it works out at £27 for 6kg. I mix the right proportions of these in a 750ml bottle one-third filled with fruit juice topped up with water - tastes absolutely fine, and does the job.
  • Probably going to have to look at mixing my own, currently use SiS but at £20/1.6kg and I use 1.5l a day (750ml bottle each way, about 1/2 on the road and the rest before/after) on warm days. I've tried using plain water and water/jiuce but i notice the difference (or at least I tell myself I do!)

Eat a banana or something else you can carry in your back pocket? You don't have to get energy from drinks. Don't know how hard you're riding but not many people ride long distances so hard they can't eat something as they go.

True. I generally only bother with energy drink if it's going to be 60 miles or more at a decent pace (18/19mphish) - my theory being that if I've kept up the energy enough up till then, my body will have some reserves left for the 70-100 mile stretch. I think I struggle to eat enough early on if I'm relying just on solids.
  • I sweat a lot so I need to replenish liquid even on a short run.. otherwise I regret it later or cramp up... experiences I try to avoid now... on a long run >2hrs I'll eat something every hour, banana, malt loaf, gel, whatever... but I still need the liquid for hydration.

I got some High 5 electrolyte tabs from CRC as freebies.

At first I thought they tasted disgusting but have now got used to them and they seem pretty good. God knows whether they actually help or if it is a placebo. Gives water a bit of interest anyway.

Sainsbury's have also been doing Innocent smoothies at £1.35 - and they seem virtuous after a ride.
