Cyclocross Shoes

Hi all,
I know this is Cyclocross not MTBing but I figured it was more relevant in this forum then any other. I am considering starting doing some cross racing but as a roadie I don't currently have any MTBing shoes. I am considering buying some shoes either Shmano MO 87 or Specialized Sport or Comb MTB. However at this early stage I would rather not do either. This leaves potentially riding Trainers and Toe Clips. Firstly does anyone have any experience in doing this? Secondly how much of an advantage in terms of actually riding and getting in the straps and out would it make and would the investment be worth before ever doing a race any thoughts appreciated.

As a part time crosser, I'd say trainers and clips will be fine for a eastern race or two, but you will want something with decent grip, merrell type trainers, you ll be on and off the bike and in the mud alot!
Same with the road, the clueless pedals are better, you want something with lots of gaps for mud clearing, the absolute best is the crankbrothers egg better, but there are several others that are also very good like Time and some shimano pedals. As with the road, go for the shoe that fits you best, it will need studs and the stiffer the better for racing.
Most important though is just to get out and enjoy it, embrace the pain! We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence
