Hello!

I've been riding an "adapted" mountain bike on the road for a while now, bigger chain rings, slicks etc........

Anyway, I've bought a road frame, equiped with Pro-Lite carbon forks and ultegra running gear (not sure how old!).

As I need to finish it I was wondering if anyone has a list of what does what, how much and where in a table each of the manufacturer's wares stand?

i.e Shimano Ultegra/Sora/105 etc?

Campag Mirage/Veloce/Mirage etc?

I'm just confused with what's what and where the stand in the rankings as such.

Also which other brands are good, Miche, SRAM, Tektro??

Also need help with brake levers/shifters, wheels, bars, cables, stem, seat tube/saddle..... So not much really!

I don't need supelight/carbon as I'm putting 15 stone of me on the bike!!!

Thanks.

In terms of groupsets it goes:

    Shimano: 2300 - Sora - Tiagra - 105 - Ultegra - Dura Ace

Campagnolo: Xenon - Veloce - Centaur - Athena - Chorus - Record - Super Record

SRAM: Apex - Rival - Force - Red

I don't know much about SRAM so can't comment. General consensus on comparison of Shimano and Campagnolo is that Veloce is comparable to 105 I believe. It's open to discussion though.

None of the brands you mentioned would merit an "avoid"

Best to get brake levers/shifters that match the rest of the groupset. For good budget wheels, most will say Planet X model Bs. All other bits and pieces are personal preference if you ask me.

Rival would be the SRAM equivalent of 105 I believe. You need to ensure you have compatablity as well, I think there is some ability to use SRAM and Shimano together but not certain on that whereas Campag is pretty much on its own. There are others far more knowledgable on these issues who will no doubt correct me!
  • Thanks chaps!

I guessed that the shifters needed matching with the deraillleurs.
