Computer question re Firefox

Seeing as between us we know everything....(Sorry about the lack of technical words)

1) Firefox: When I open up new tabs they stay open on the top part of a screen for a while. Then, sometimes (can't see any pattern) they disappear when I open up a new screen until there's just the small Firefox logo at the bottom left hand corner of the screen next to the "start" logo. I'm not making myself very clear...

Example: I will have my e-mail account open and exchange e-mails with someone. Then I open up a new tab for, say, this site. The main screen is then only this site, the e-mail account tab disappears and I have to move the cursor down to the bottom Firefox logo to check if I've had an answer instead of just being able to see whilst writing here.

'Clear as mud, I know, but if anyone knows how to stop this I would be a happy bunny.

    The only thing I can think of is go to;

View > Toolbars > Tabs on Top

    And make sure it's ticked.

Thank you. It's been annoying me for weeks. As you can tell by post, computing is not really my strong point.

Wait! It IS ticked? It was, but it seems to be working since I unclicked it. I'll keep you posted if it doesn't work. You must be on the edge of your seat ;-)

@ lifeform, Thanks for that. I did the opposite of what you said and somehow it did the job.

    +1 for opera.

Just works. Fast, stable, all the toys without installing extensions - brilliant.

Does a browser really make a big difference? I ditched Explorer for Firefox years ago. I only really use the PC for internet. Still worth changing?

Are you opening in new windows rather than new tabs?

Edit: SOrry - missed that you had it solved. I would never have guessed that was the problem and solution!

    Thats what i was thinking.
Try: Edit > Preferences > Choose tabs from the menu at the top > click "open new windows in a new tab instead"

No, no. Just new tabs. But the problem has been resolved. Thanks a lot, anyway.

But, seeing as the experts are here...I have a standard German kerboard (qwertZ), but am learning Russian. Is there any way that I can switch between writing Russian and English alphabets? I want to practise the Russian writing and be able to switch quickly to the English alphabet.
  • This is the reason I only use FF to view the Girls in Lycra thread.

As far as keyboard settings, if you go to control panel from the main menu, then go to regional and language options, you can change the keyboard language from there. You will probably have to find a language pack from somewhere online though, as computers normally don't have many languages pre-installed.

You're in the same neck of the woods as me. Know what to do in German?

I don't mean instructions in German, just what the things I have to click on are in German :-)

    (Or Austrian. That's my speciality :-) )
