Rotor & Axle compatability

I am just back biking after a few years off, and things have moved on a bit in braking.

I have a 2004 Marin Attack Trail with Hope M4 180mm rotors.

My wheels are a little pringled, and the hubs have seen better days, so need some more.

So,

Can I use any rotors with these brakes, say Shimanos new centre lock type.

Instead of QR, can I use the 10mm bolt?

yes if the wheels will take them. (again depends on which M4 and which shimano rotor as some may not clear).

front Qr is 9mm (3/8") rear Qr is 10mm

  • The calipers are shimmed, and have oval holes, so you can adjust for position side to side, and to move it slightly in or out on the rotor, I think the M4s were 183mm, so 180 should realistically be ok.

So my standard QR drop outs will take 9mm front bolt and 10mm rear bolt.

too small a rotor and you can get your brakes "failing" as the friction material can come into contact with each other reducing the braking power a lot. make sure all the pad face is swept.
