Hi all

Has anyone had the chance to compare the older style Shimano XT 770 and the new XT 780 pedals? My existing 770s are looking a bit shabby and could do with replacing sometime soon and the new larger contact surface on the 780s seems like a good idea but i would like to know is whether it actually makes much difference.
A good deal on the 780s has just turned up on my email and i am tempted.
Any input much appreciated.

Thanks Paul

Wouldnt think theyd offer much more. Is shabby a reason to buy new. Bet they still run well?

Do the 780s have a larger contact area than the 770s? FWIW I have some of the 785 XT trail pedals and although the cage has its advantages when clipping in, I can't really feel it though my shoes when pedalling. There's a little bit more support on either side of the cleats and there's...something under the arch/back of the toes but they are nothing like flats.

SPD shoes are stiff and the support comes from the shoes, not the pedals.

blitz - you're correct on the model numbers - 780 are new race 770. ??5 denotes trail for XT/R

When you say nothing like a flat - you mean that don't think you can now get away with using them as a mix better?

They're still SPDs and they feel/behave like SPDs.

The cage helps when flipping them round to clip in and on the right kind of bike they look cool but they are not by any stretch of the imagination 'SPD flats'.

I've seen some poor reviews of the new XTRs and the increased surface area causing problems. Just buy M540s, they're XTs without the moniker, and a subsequently lower price tag!

Whichever ones you go for check out on one, they have some cracking deals on pedals at the moment. :)

It does not sound as though the new style pedals are a great leap forward so i will wait until my existing 770s give up. It was actually an on one email that got me thinking about repacing them in the first place.
    Cheers!
