Fox Vanilla - pretensioner

After battering my bike at the weekend I've found that the pre tensioner on my 2010 Fox 32 Vans - which is the blue knob on the top of the lhs fork - will not adjust properly. I am 99% certain that it has grit under it and I'm reluctant to force it in case it scores the alloy but I'd like to remove it and clean underneath it. Because it is the spring fork, tension and so on I'd be quite pleased not to get a head full of coiled steel I'm tentative in just unscrewing everything.

How do I get the blue knob off - there is no obvious way other than just unscrewing it unless I unbolt the piston assembly and get at it from underneath. And will I die in the process?

    Preload, not pretension......

Go to the Fox website and download the tech manual, full instructions , but a good wash round the area would be the first point of call!
