I'm a complete beginner on this mountain biking lark! I'm looking for a capable trail bike with a shop that does finance up to about £500. I'm currently favouring this; http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/giant-ta ... 59898.html any opinions would be good!

Specialised Hardrock Pro or VooDoo HooDoo for £500 budget0

Anyone else got any input? Any opinions on the Giant that I've put the link up for?0
-
The Giant is not too bad for the money, though the fork is pretty dire.
Have a look at the Decathlon Rockrider 8.10 -
The rockrider looks like a reasonable spec. Do you think the Giant frame is more worthy of upgrades than the rockrider? To be honest the brand snob in me would rather have the Giant, I also think it would hold it's value better when it comes to upgrading?0
-
Maybe, both are good frames, but the spec on the Rockrider is far, far better. Lighter too.0

I like the hydraulic equipped GT Avalanche 3.0 in white but it just doesn't seem particularly well kitted compared to other things. I am wondering about just going for the one I prefer though, after all it will take long enough for my skill to catch up to the capability of almost any bike!0
-
Yeah, the 3.0 suffers.
Get the best bike you can afford. No point being put off the sport by a crap bike that doesn't perform. The forks on a good bike will make you smile, not grimace.0 -
What do you think should be my priorities? Most groupsets will do the job so not too fussed there, I will not have gripshift though, I hate them with a passion. Is the frk where I need to be concentrating?0

Fork definitely. For this money you want hydraulic damping, preferably adjustable. The Talon 2 gets this, but it is a very heavy flexy unit.
Good forks to look for are the Rockshox Tora, Recon and Suntour Epicon and Raidon. Dart 3 is ok.0 -
I've found this, seems a good spec for the money, what do you think? I love the looks of it too, which is a bonus! http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=592410

Seems quite good for the price.----
