Hi everyone.

I currently ride an Orange Crush 2010 (boggo, no changes) and am starting to think about getting my first ever full susser.

I've always liked the look of the Orange Five and would probably do a custom home build, based on a frame only - BUT, I've heard that they can be quite heavy and I'm keen to try to get something that is as light as possible for the inevitable climes, but is compliant and fun on the down hills.

Don't need anything mega AM or downhill, just simple xc/trail use.

I've seen the Canyon website and they look great, probably the Nerve XC 9.0SL. Don't need the forks on the LTD.

My budget is between 2.5 and 3.5k.

So questions are;
1) any idea what kind of weight a full build O five is with decent kit?
2) real-owner canyon 9.0SL comments?
3) any other bikes I should consider? Decent spec/weight/price
4) what material is the canyon frame made from!? I presume it's alloy?

Cheers!

Not ridden the canyon so can't comment other than to say it looks good.

I've had a 2011 Orange 5 pro for about a year now and it's superb.
It's not too heavy at 13.52kg (29.8lb) and I find that with the pro-pedal wwitched on on th rear shock, it climbs really well. It really comes into its own on the descents though!
  • I would choose the Canyon.

For XC and trail use, the standard Canyons could be ideal. The Nerve XC 9.0 won our trail bike of the year:

    Claimed weight just 24.75lbs.

The SL gets better kit and is just 23lbs!

Orange 5 is nice BUT after about a months riding it will sound like someone throwing a cutlery tray down the trail. Those big box section chain stays amplify every tiny creak to sound like the bike is falling apart. They are also the Mondeo of the trail centre.

Make sure you test ride a five, I did and have to say I found it all hype unfortunately. They look good in an agricultural kind of way they're simple and can be built light and are plenty tough. I just didn't like the ride, felt to me like the bike was bending in half round corners due to the single pivot. At least that's what I put it down to, no problems on a Blur 4X like that just a bit small for me.

The Canyon's are looking like a really good buy the 9.0 is on of the recommended options in WMB in the Trail Full Sus category.

Titus FTM Carbon (frame only from on one= £900) and then custom build. 150mm front travel, 135mm rear, built up with xt groupset, revs and 1800g wheels, total weight is about 27 pounds-Cost just under £2k. For your extra cash, you could easily get the weight down to about 24 pounds.

I tried the 5 the other week - my first ride on a 150mm full suss, from my current 100mm set up. I was well impressed - the ride was really good, flew over the course over at cannock.

Climbing was better than i had been led to believe, but i did notice it was noticeably more difficult to 'pop' off things as the single pivot tended to eat up the lips on jumps, sort of making me roll of everything!

Weight wise i didn't notice a load of difference with my current bike, but i'm fairly heavy anyway!
    Canyon AM 6.0
At some point i am going to manage to jump one of these things.....

I've had mine a year now and it doesn't make any creaking noises.
I take your point about the "mondeo" but that's for a reason -people buy them because they're good and they get rave reviews when tested.

If you have £3.5k to play with then definitely consider bikes from Santa Cruz, pivot, turner, ibis and yeti, all make superb 140-150mm travel bikes, I own a mojo HD and it blows most things away, although I haven't been able to test the new pivot 5.7 carbon or yeti sb66 yet, but these are very much looking like they'll destroy the five in most areas. I don't have much of a problem with orange, but I'm not a single pivot fan and it's abit heavy compared to the others

I just (Yesterday) had delivery of an Ibis Mojo HD 140... Sram X9 build, Fox talas forks

I considered an Orange 5 too as I am in the camp that believes they are really nice bikes, however, the Mojo was calling me and the price (For a Mojo!!!!) was great. Saturday I'll know how good it is :)

Personally, I'd go Orange over a Canyon as it's agricultural looks are great and everyone I know that has one loves them.... If you like to shop at Aldi, get a Canyon (Great value)
