Cause for Celebration!
The Good News:-
I start a new job next Monday.
It could be more interesting than what I am doing now.
It will enhance my C.V.
I get a 20% rise :P
I will be too busy to bug people by posting here.
The Bad News:-
I will be too busy to read the posts here.
It may be more boring than what I am doing just now.
It may be so busy as to curtail my cycling hours.
There may be no bike security so possibly no commuting.
Just thought I'd let you know so you can breathe a sigh of relief when I go quiet next week.

None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Congrats !!!
Spill the beans then, what's the new job ??Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved0 -

A designer in Aberdeen!!!
Here's a palette you can use. You may have to explain to the locals what the red and green and yellow are.
Good luck. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.0 -

@ Pigtail - I have been working up here off and on (mostly on) for 10 years so feel aquatinted with the roads west of Dyce.
I am convinced Aberdeen is the world's first stealth city. Grey sea, grey buildings and grey sky. You could sail right on by and not even noticeNone of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
Ahh - okay. I thought you were moving up for this job.
You've almost certainly done more cycling here than I have then!
I cannot defend it as enthusiastically as I normally do today, given the state of the weather.0 -

No complaints, hence the celebrations :P
Of the negatives, I couldn't really complain about having to work while I am being paid to do so and there may well be superb cycling facilities.
In the meantime I will make the most of my 10 hours a day online while being paid till FridayNone of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -

More grey than Sheffield? Blimey.
I spent literally a few weekends up in Sheff on separate occassions and, apart from the stunning countryside around the city, found it to be the greyest place I have ever seen outside of a really grey battleship that I was once on in the middle of a really grey sea when it was raining grey rain out of grey clouds whilst I was dressed in grey.
Concrete everywhere, grey skies and the sad shapes of the once proud factories that Thatcher destroyed. Rather grey though. And hilly, much like Bristol and Rome. But without the wolves.0 -
Good luck with the new job.
I've just resigned from my job of 14 years to join another company. Took too much agonising but in the end if I hadn't done it I would have been accepting all the things that I believe are wrong where I am now.
Yes, your new job might be more boring or worse than your current job in other ways, but if you don't do it you never know.Where the neon madmen climb0 -

The way things are going you're going to be in one of the safest parts of the country......you don't need a helper to sharpen your pencils do you?The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Long time since I used pencils, and they were the propelling type anyway
On the good news front, I heard that the new company has an active cycle club and shower facilities for my office :P
Just as well as the local train was cancelled last night and this morning due to flooding.
Please take this rain down south. I hear you could do with it
Just got to find out about bike security now.None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
Good luck with the new job and welcome to sunny Aberdeen. Are you moving up here or commuting at the weekends?
If you have any time and fancy seeing some of the biking countryside drop me a pm or pop out to Ellon for a club run one Sunday morning. www.ythancc.org.uk

Colin,
Bejesus! You timed that right, the sun is actually shining!
I commute at weekends so no Sunday run I'm afraid. As said above I have been riding west of Dyce for a fair bit now. Gotta make the most of the week night runs though. The nights are fair drawing in you know.None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
Congrats on the new job.
As for the whole Aberdeen thing...
I first went about 7 years ago on a beautiful September day. I remember being startled at how gorgeous the city is. A few hours later, I was sat in a restaurant eating dinner gazing at the sun kissed buildings across the road when it suddenly struck me that all that grey must look a bit drab in the wet.
My next visit was in the wet. Needless to say, the architecture is still stunning but the overall feel is a little more drab to say the least.0 -
You see I should read the full thread
What kind of designing do you do?
I was supposed to be camping in Huntly this week but since most of teh campsite was washed away I decided to come back to work.0 -
Spender45 wrote:What kind of designing do you do?
I thought I had already replied to this. Must have hit return & back instead of submit
Anyway, 3D modelling & draughting for subsea oil & gas. No surprise there then I presume?
Back to what I came in for. That's me wrapping up and getting demob happy :P
Just got to pack up and say my cheerios before heading off.
The new job is very busy so I expect to be quiet on here for a while so everyone can breathe a sigh of reliefNone of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
You should have requested your bike facilities etc, as part of your package... I did!
Had a video conferece interview with peeps in Aberdeen, the manager going to great lengths to lead me through a whole load of info. At the end of his presentation he enquired as to whether I had any questions...
Yes, I says... Got any bikes in the gym! He looked completely stumped, couldn't give an answer, as he'd obviously never een in there, but said that if there wasn't, he would by one.
There was an old gym bike in the facility, but was getting a little tired. Two new spin bikes, of my choice, arrived about 3 days ago
Moral... If you don't ask, you don't get!... Plenty of sunshine offshore at the moStart with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
Ah! But I am contract. I have to take what I am given. On the other hand, the main perk is I can afford a new bike :P
But not one every dayNone of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
I lived in Aberdeen for nearly 20 years, it's a great place, although it can be a bit grey at times as I'm sure you know.
Strangely enough I was also doing 3D work in the oil and gas industry although my work was more pretty pictures and animation for videos etc. What sort of 3D do you do?

Basically lumps of metal with holes in it. Standard subsea kit that used to be done in Autocad and on the board before that. It's a bit more interesting than that but certainly not glamorousNone of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
I lived in Aberdeen for 12 years and still go there quite a lot. Started on a six week job and still with the same company 20 years later! The oil business has a pretty good social life, you'll enjoy it.
Once folk come to Aberdeen they tend to stay, always good jobs in the oil game for experienced people. I don't think a lot of folk down south realise just how big oil is up here and how much of the world's infrastructure is designed and run from Aberdeen. You only have to count the 911s and Audi R8s on Union Street to see the money.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

At a time of recession BP is struggling with a lack of skilled workers:

I've seen this time and again. Folk do a few good jobs in the UK sector then get promoted and end up in a higher paying job in a foreign asset. It's possible to earn seriously stupid money tax free if you go to some of the more dodgy countries.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.
