Opening EF-50 shifters

Looking through the gaps in the case and into my commuter's Shimano EF-50 combined shifter/brake levers, I can see one of the springs in each unit is starting to rust. I've been thinking about opening the units up and putting some grease on the springs, but aren't entirely sure that opening the case won't lead to a bunch of small, fiddly, spring-loaded parts flying out all over the place.
Does anyone know if opening this thing up is a bad idea? I imagine only putting the thinnest layer of grease of the springs so as not to gum everything up

it is fine as you have to anyway to change the cable.
