Anyone ridden Cut Gate this week? Thinking of going tomorrow but not sure if worth it as has rained a bit with more predicted for tomo. Will it just be a total quagmire?

Going by train so starting at Hope and aiming to do Hope Brink, The Beast, Lockerbrook, round Ladybower, up and down Cut Gate then back down to Bamford with an optional extra of Whinstone Lee Tor.

Is it worth leaving this for a dry week so that it's not a total peat bog slog fest?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers.

  • Cut Gate is never a bog fest these days, even in winter. Well, no, there is one small boggy section, but that is boggy even in drought.

Rode it last week and it was OK.Not as dry as it was a few months back but much drier than it was 2008-2010 8)
The section where Cutgate meets Margery hill is holding a bit of water but no more than usual.Whinny Lee Tor was boggier towards Cutthroat bridge but still OK 8)

will be fine. be dry as a bone for weeks. the intermittent rain we've had won't turn it into it's default somme like setting. meant to big rain on Saturday though, so i'd check the wind speed, pretty bleak up there when it gets over 15-20 mph
  • Cheers for replies.

Ended up at Cannock as weather looked best in that direction. Turned out to be a very hot day.

Will prob hit up Cut Gate in the next couple of weeks

We're doing it again Sunday Morning.Doing it on my new HT as I've only ever done it on a FS 8)
I'll let you know how the trail looks.
  • Did Cut Gate yesterday. Started from Langsett in light drizzle - climb up was fine, basically dry, just a bit damp on top. Descent to Slippery Stones a bit sketchy in parts but no probs.

Then decided to ride around the reservoirs before coming back, when it started pi**ing it down. Got absolutely soaked and the switchbacks were running with water on the push back up. However the rain then stopped and the ride back down to Langsett was an absolute cracker - looked as if the rain hadn't made it over the hill. Took the right fork at the bottom (via North America, had gone left before) which was ace.

One of the best trails in the Peaks.

Rode Cutgate from Langsett this morning and the section from North America over Midhope moor is a bit loamy but Mickledon Edge is fine.A bit muddy on parts of Cutgate/Margery Hill(usual spots) and some of the ruts after the flagstones on the drop to Cranberry Clough are a bit loamy but other than that it's all good 8)
First time on a HT and I actually prefer it to the FS on this trail 8)

I've just come back from doing Cutgate. The sun was out and it wasn't too boggy - the Maxxis advantage rear tyre I fitted before hand helped a lot where it was though. There were still the shallow-looking puddles in places that swallow your front wheel whole when you ride into them.

The only problem was the swarms of flies! It was Ok on the way back but on the way there, you had to try and keep your mouth closed due the the number of them.
