Hey bro. Don't worry about average speed. All computers will show you that and it's not important anyway unless you always use the same route in identical conditions. Trafflic lights, slowing down for pee breaks etc all affect it. Sigma are generally pretty good in my experience.
What do you need GPS for? Seeing where you've been or planning new routes? For the former you can download imapmyride for free. For the latter you can look on a map :-)0 -
Endmondo
I have it on my Android, but as far as i know it's available on iPhone too....very very good app! Used to use Mapmyride app all the time, and the GPS was a bit dodgy but i was happy, then discovered Endmondo and it's awesome!
They also have a site where you can upload your rides and get all the info (garmin style) - it can also connect to bluetooth HRM and cadence sensors for extra info and if you're into that sort of stuff, it will live update your position to Facebook/Twitter.....not that i do this as everyone then knows i'm not at home!0 -
cyclemeter is pretty good for iphone0

Not significantly unless you have loads of them. Average speed is very useful irrespective of whether or not you run the same route all the time.
I once saw my average speed drop by 1/10 kmh in the space of time it took me to carry my bike upstairs (the wheel was still going round slowly) .-)0 -

Interesting - if you took 10 seconds to climb the stairs that equates to about a 30 minute ride at 20km/hr. Which is more than I'd have thought. Then again, over a 6 hour ride, your wheel would need to be spinning aimlessly for a couple of minutes to cost you that 0.1km/hr!Faster than a tent.......0 -
I must have been on the brink of the next 10th. I think that makes sense0

I like runkeeper (can be set for cycling despite the name).
Can't compare it with others as I tried it, liked it and so have stuck with it.0 -
I've been using this for a year now http://www.sportstracklive.com/ great statistics, PB's etc.
GPS not as accurate as a proper bike computer though.
Average is important for many reasons, many factors impact it on an individual ride basis but if you know last year you were between 26kph and 29kph per ride and this year you are 28kph to 31kph, you'll know you've improved. Also if you want to join a group and they say they usually aim for 35kph... you'll know whether you're up to it or not.MTB HardTail: GT Aggressor XC2 '09

Like Olly, I used to use mapmyride on my Android but it was pretty buggy and the GPS liked to draw a huge straight line from where it lost signal, back to my house.
I know use Endomondo. The GPS tracking works brilliantly and the site contains better statistics if, like me, you like studying all the little details of your ride. You can get it through the App Store, there's two versions, get the free one - the 'Pro' version isn't worth the extra.0 -
I use Map My Ride and have the Wahoo Fisica case with speed, cadence and HRM sensors running. I like Map My Ride because I can customise the display to show which data I choose and I like the elevation data when viewing the map afterwards.0

I use cycle meter on my iPhone and seems fairly consistent with my garmin 500.Felt AR4
