After a bit of advice from people who know the area better than me.
Basically I'm after a route round Rivington but with a bit of a difference.
I am planning on starting my ride from the Barn side and then heading up to the pike, however i get up there the none road way. And from the pike across the hill towards the descent down onto Belmont road if its possible.

Any suggestions?

Yes head South from the Pike and along the road to the long tarmac climb to the top.
There are several options from there to the top of Winter hill.

But don't take my word for it ask some locals on thier forum here

If you head over the Belmont Road you can thenpick up the tracks through Roddlesworth Eoods and over to Tockholes and eith round darwen towe was or turn along Katherine Edge and there are lots of bridleways through Cadshaw and over to Egerton. Or you can cut along Burnt Edge from part way up the tarmac road to Winter Hill and do a circuit.
Otherwise at lower leve3l you can go along tracks by theYarrow reservoir and cut over to Healey Nab and there is now a cyclepath all the way over to White Coppice and Brinscall. Best to get the local OS map and have a good look. Lots there but you have to be a bit creative to stay legal!!
  • This is the thing, i obviously know the area, but i don't know what I'm allowed to ride on and what not. I remember as a kid when i was in the Army cadets, we walked up the hill from San Marinos up to the mast and then made our way down and onto Great Hill over some boggy horribleness and then out onto Belmont road.

From the pike i just ride the straight path over the moors to the mast (plenty of pushing required) then down the descent to Belmont (lots of fun and pretty gnarly), push back up and descend down the back of winter hill which is even gnarlier you really have to get over the back wheel in places that spits you back out on Belmont road. Follow it back up to the sewing tower turn right at the fork in the road and there is a very rocky descent down to Sheep house lane which brings you out at Rivington Resovoir, from there you can ether loop back to the barm or up to the nab for a loop.

Rode the Nab the other week and although it's fun there was way to much climbing for my liking and it's very tight so difficult to get any real speed or air :(
What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?

This is one of my favourite little runs around Rivington mast Its not all strictly legal but no one ever seems to mind us riding it.

It doesn't really help local relationships between landowners and bikers if you post a route on a forum like this with parts of it that are not legal. There are already enough problems around Rivi without giving them ammunition to fire. Some authorities want mtbs banned up there. If going public please only give the legal ones - what you ride is up to you of couse. Thanx

Get over yourself I have been riding those routes for nearly 40 years and no one has ever complained to me. The problem at Rivi is nobs riding through the gardens not over tracks on the moors.

If you dont like tracks being published on tinterweb your about 10 years too late.

I have done a shorter version of this a couple of times, but I have been turning off Belmont road and heading back towards the Pike/Pigeon tower rather than going right.

Not had a problem cycling up the road to winter hill, just usually see dog walkers and ramblers who say hello.

Reply for stubs - nothing to get over, :) I agree with you about riding the tracks and not having problems AND about the 'nobs' who ride aroud the gardens where they shouldn't. And that is because you ride sensibly. Iit is only last year that a combination of UU and the local rangers were trying to get mtbs banned up there altogether - we were geting a bad press. So all I was suggesting is that we don't want to give them any ammunition to use against us - so hence the post on going 'public' on where we ride - especially if you get groups going along. But anyway far more tracks up there ought to be made into official bridleways - no reason other than bureaucracy why they shouldn't. And if they did far fewer might make a nuisance of themselves round the gardens - I certainly prefer be out on the moors than mingling with strollers. dogs and prams!!! Happy riding!
