Looking for advice - Sora / Tiagra compatibility with Deore

Hi there

Looking at making some changes to my 'do it all' bike - an Uncle John currently fitted with:

- Sora FD and shifters
- Tiagra RD
- Shimano Sport chainset
- Avid Shorty 4 brakes

The FD / chainset and rear mech are all a bit worse for wear and I'm considering looking at replacing them all with Deore LX for a bit more robustness, as I'm doing a fair bit more trail riding / touring than I did when I first built the bike.

- Should my existing Sora shifters work fine with the Deore components? Any compelling reason why I should upgrade the shifters too?
- Any issues with changing my Bonty Sport cranks to Deore? Will I need to make any other changes?

Would appreciate any advice, as I'm something of a novice with all this malakey. Thanks

TMW

A Deore FD will not work with your Sora shifters. RD will be fine (if you get 9-speed).

Chainset? Depends on what rings you put on and what you have now.

Thanks for that. What's the reason for the incompatibility with the Sora shifters? Both would be triples.
  • For some reason Shimano road sti's pull a different amount of cable than MTB shifters. It's worth giving it a try though. Also attaching the cable for the fd on the opposite side of the pinch bolt to normal may help.

In the past I've mixed Deore & Sora with no issues.

    Shiters were Sora 3x8 3300
    Front mech Deore Multifit
Chainset M440 but only used the middle & outer rings
    Rear Mech Alivio I think.

I tried Sora FM and shifters but it would index on the MTB chainset, as soon as I fitted the MTB front mech all the shifting issues stopped.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
