Hi all,

Do these sunglasses make any real difference when out riding? Do the vented lenses help much? Any real advantages over, say, flak jackets or similar?

I am an avid Oakley fan (have 6 pairs so far  ) and am heading to the states in a few weeks so thought I may look into these, but am keen to hear peoples thoughts.

Thanks in advance

Rob

I have a pair of split jackts, woth non vented lenses.

They are great on the bike so light you dont know you have them on. These frames allow for the changing of lenses, i hve two sets one for strong sunshine and one for mpre overcast days.

I tried both models on and i opted for the split jackets because,

    Lower price with same function

    Not as large and garish

    Fitted my face better

More usuable for other occasions when not on the bike.

I sourced mine from USA through Amazon £140 complete with case and 2 sets of lens

    Hope this helps.

Split Jackets arnt as flashy, but there all you need, I love the radar, but again more aesthetically than anything.

Jawbones are the best glasses I've ever used. Very comfy and almost completely stops the windy blowing in your eyes. Mine are prescription so never tried the vented lenses. But only notice steaming up when I stop on a wet or cold day.

  • I've got a pair of jawbones and love them, the lenses are unvented but as previous poster said they only steam at lights. It's not a major inconvenience but I have considered buying vented lenses as I wear them commuting so it can be very stop/start and I do value being able to see the car I"m about to crash in to...

Vented makes no difference. I bought the vented ones as it's what the pro's have cos I'm sad like that! Mine still fog up when stationary on muggy days.

Split jackets are probably every bit as good as jaw bones - it's just the look...
  • i wear x metal juliets, only because i had them before i started cycling. ten eighty, my local oakley dealer will be getting more business from me very soon, i won't wear any other brand. they manufacture excellent glasses for almost every use

I have both, Jawbones in black with vented lenses, and split jackets in white without vented lenses. In my experience the vented lenses make no difference at all. I prefer the size of the jawbones, and I think for some reason the quality feels better and stronger. But I like them in white, so I wear the split jackets a lot too.

  • I bought a pair of custom Jawbones this year. I picked two sets of lenses to go with them:

    1. VR50 Photochromic Vented
    2. Ice Iridium Polarized (non-vented)

On hot days I do find the venting make a difference - helping dissipate some moisture (sweat) near my eyes. However I do think it makes a huge difference except on the most hot and humid days (which we have had our fair number of this summer).

However, I absolutely love the fact that the VR50's are photochromic. I've been using them in all lighting conditions including into the evening and they work great. It seem to adapt fairly quickly to changing light conditions.

I switched to photochromic lenses on my ski goggles last winter and now with my cycling glasses also photochromic, it will be hard to go back.

Love my jawbones, best glasses ever for riding. Had endless cheap pairs and they all fell apart after a short time, so I invested in a pair of black frames with black lenses, paid £144 and had a free pair of yellow lenses thrown in.

As for venting, no idea. I wear contacts and dont find my eyes water or dry out with them, so it works on that front, and only on the wettest of days when I stop do I fog up. My friends walk around blind when I can see. Even if they do fog up, they clear VERY fast.
