Can't give too much away but it is actually a big part of my professional life... It is the dross that needs sorted before getting to the gems, and FWIW if you have a BBC TV show on a Saturday night you should not be allowed to put on a show at the Fringe IMO.0 -

This is fast becoming my favourite Thread... if we reach pge 20 by friday is this then an Audax - ps I already have a beard and will be 40 soon so it's only a matter of time!
Anyway - does anyone else have friends who own bikes (as opposed to cyclists) and phone you up say "lets go out for a ride together" and you want to say "No thanks" despite it being a nice summers evening and you have naff all else to do, because you know it will be like riding out with your granny and therefore a waste of time...0 -

Are you referring to the toothy Scouser? I'm not sure, where do you draw the line? No Nicholas Parsons because he has a successful Radio show. I think what makes the Fringe is the fact it has a bit of something for everyone, admitedly loads of dross as well. The thing I object to is the likes of Ricky Gervais playing Edinburgh Castle ( a few year ago) and charging top dollar. That's not what the Fringe should be about. It's about people putting on shows and losing money!0 -

Admit it would be difficult to draw a line, but when I first came to Edinburgh 1991 Jack Dee was kind of the first "big name" of the day to perform other than that it was still real pot luck across the board and so you had to pay real attention to reviews and the word in street/ bars/pubs etc to suss it out. Last year Jason Mamford did 10 nights or something, on the other hand if loads more people come to see mamford/bishop/mcintyre etc and then go and see other shows as well i.e. new/emerging stuff then great - but I get the feeling they don't. just my opinion mind, I don't have a monopoly on being right - but do own a VAST shareholding BTW Edin festivals (there are 12) are worth more to tourisim in Scotland than golf by some 30% so they are doing something right.0 -

I agree, the problem is when ' big' names go up there to play large venues for many nights, and take away a large potential audience for other lesser known (and funnier!) acts. In the end though you will always get the kind of punter who is only there to see the likes of Jason Manford and has no idea that Daniel Kitson eg. is on around the corner.
And I did not mean that the festival does not make money, just that most acts who put on shows there will not normally make any, in fact a lot end up out of pocket.0 -
Anyway - Back to the mountains - we must be on the decent and getting back to the treeline and the picture is breaking up
