Loud disc brakes?

Got new bike with Avid Elixir 3's. They seem pretty effective, and are defo enough for my riding. But they're often noisy under braking, loud friction noise, and I can hear the "thrumming" of the vents in the disc. Pretty difficult to explain, but kinda like a loud "ssshhhhhhhhh" with a bit of "du-du-du-du-du" thrown in!!

I'm new to disc brakes so not sure if this is normal or because they're not set up right or because they get full of crap easily or something?

Any advice greatly received. They work, but don't want them to suddenly stop working when I need them!!

    to help bed in

soak the brakes in water and ride around slowly with the brakes dragging, never completely stopping, once the disk's are dry from friction it should be done

the squeak will go and brake feel will turn up.......
  • My Formula rotors make a sort of "Schzing" noise and I think it's pretty cool to be honest. Especially when you're braking hard it's sort of a nice reminder that they're just sitting there doing their job.

  • Bit of an update, they seem to be getting better and quieter all the time, especially the front. Out in the p*ssing rain today and even then they worked fine!
  • i found that my formula's did this after a really wet ride, so i sprayed a degreaser on the discs, not heard a peep since......sounds strange but they feel sharper and are very powerful
