I'm going to be replacing the pads on my shimano 486 brakes but I don't have the spacer. I'd be grateful for some hints on an alternative or where I can source the spacer from.

    why?

just press on the old pads to push the pistons home.

    remove old pads fit new.

    sorted.

I read a guide on changing the pads and it said to use a spacer. I've already pushed the pistons back just waiting on the replacements to arrive. good news that I don't need the spacer, cheers!

There are two types of spacer. There is a thin orange one that you can slip into the calliper between the pads when transporting the bike with no wheels on. This stops the pistons popping out if the brake lever gets pulled accidentally. Then there is the thick yellow one which you use when the pads are removed when bleeding the brake.

As Nick says swapping pads does not require any spacer.
