Road bike advice

I have been riding my Specialized Hardrock Pro for a couple of years including both off and on road. More recently I have been mostly doing road riding and changed the tyres for Specialized Nimbus 1.5 to make the going a little easier. Trouble is, my son wants me to go off road with him and I am regularly out with friends on 25 mile road rides - the theory was that I would keep swapping the tyres, but this is a real pain and not happening.
I would like to get a second bike for use on roads. I have decided that I don't want a drop handlebar racder (I had Trek 1.1 recently but sold it as I didn't like the gearing or drops)). I really like the disc brakes on the mountain bike and would like to keep similar gearing (to help get me over the Mendip hills). The bike would be used for 15 - 30 mile evening rides and some longer weekend treks/challenges. Does anyone have any recommendations I should look at? Should I go for more of a road bike with straight handlebars (eg. Sirrus or Giant rapid) - but these don't have disc brakes, or something more like a Kona Dew Delux/Trek 7.5 Disc or even a Boardman Hybrid?
