Racey XC hardtail for £850 or less

Any suggestions? My 25 mile round commute is the only riding I get these days, and while my road bike is great for the job, there are a fair few bridle ways and bits of single track that look good for a hammering.
So rangey top tubes and low overall weights are the order of the day.
Giant XTC 1 and Zaskar Expert from the ever reliable Pauls Cycles are current top of the list.
Any other tips?

I was going to say the Zaskar Expert as soon as I saw the thread title. Not much better for this money.0

Ha - wondered how long it would take you!
It is very tempting, however I've never got on with GT's triple triangle in the past as it always places the top tube too close for comfort. Never sat on a Zaskar though and sadly none near me so would have to take a punt.
I've tried an XTC though and the fit is fine, although the rear end is a little harsh from what I've heard.Less internal organs, same supertwisted great taste.0 -
The Zaskars though have quite a long extension to the seat tube, so actually can work out more standover than other straight tubed top tubes.0

Hmmm... need to try one for size don't I.
I'm right in assuming they make a comfortable all day ride as well as a high speed mile muncher? Are the Crossrides a bit of a coup for the price? They seem very good to be OE spec.
It's dawned on me that any semi acceptable bit of singletrack is a good commute by bike for me (have given up the car), hence the requirement for duality of purpose.Less internal organs, same supertwisted great taste.0 -
The frame does have quite a bit of give in it, much more so than older Zaskars! Yeah, the wheels not bad for the price, but the full SLX and Recon with Motion Control seal the deal for me.0

Too slow, looks like the last medium sold today so it's off the cards now.Less internal organs, same supertwisted great taste.0 -

To many nothing, but XC bikes do have the racier stance for max efficiency. Some prefer a more laid back approach liek the RM. Seems a good buy for those wanting a bike of that type.0

Yes, normally I would agree, a hardtail is just a hardtail right? However, it's a 25 mile round trip commute to my nearest decent trail. Over that sort of distance a short, upright trail bike is a bit of a chore, where-as a head down, ar$e up XC bike makes it a lot easier.Less internal organs, same supertwisted great taste.0
