Creaking from stem

Hi Guys,
I seem to have developed a creaking in the stem/headset area (as far as I can tell) that comes and goes normally when I'm stomping hard. I could also swear that if you wiggle the bars side to side, there's a lot of play and the steering feels a bit sketchy - especially when you do come to a corner.
Following on from this thread (http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... highlight=) could something be broken?

strip it down and have a look.
