Making the move to cars........ worth it?

Well after having binned the motorbike, I'm looking at getting a car for the winter, and being able to drive the missus round instead of her driving me around when we wanna go somewhere all the time.
Now been looking at small Fiats as they are the cheapest cars for me to insure and i don't want any of the crappy Vauxhall Corsa rubbish that most people have as first cars.
Now it isn't cheap £166 a month fully comp with my Mum as a named driver and me as main driver. I pay not much more than £166 fully comp for the full year on my motorbike.
Now I'm a 2nd year student Nurse at Uni, and i get £544 a month bursary when i'm on placements and when I'm doing theory i do 2/3 nights part time in a nursing home which takes my monthly income to about 800 after tax.
I have £300 outgoings for various bits and baps and obviously board to the mother. Now my question is, is it really worth the extra expense to be warmer in winter?

Hmm, nurse... Fiat... thinks.. Kitty!
Are you a male nurse?
car = no brainer, ideal for lugging mountain bikes in, unless you're like Kitty too and just stalk but never ride an MTB0 -
What age and model of fiats are you looking at? I had a punto a few years back which gave me, then Mrs G a torrid 8 years of ownership. Cars cost money fact of life, but I'd not be without one, you can load a bike on it and just have general freedom. I'd never own another motorbike (well in my case it was a scooter) simply because of the other people on the road.
A tip try Admiral Multicar, My car insurance went up from £600 to £1800 with esure this year, when I rang them apparently it was a mistake and should have been £900, still a hefty rise for no apparent reason. Mrs G was paying £700 and the cheapest quote I found for me was £715. with Admiral Multicar we got the two insured for £910 with us both driving each others. So if your mum has a car herself or dad or whatever it may work out cheaper.
But seriously, y reg to around 54 plate fiats, ive heard so many grumbles about them0 -
Yeah I'm a Male Nurse. Well looking at the newest and lowest mileage one i can get for a £1000 budget, as thats what i'd get for my 125.
Yeah i do alot of mountain biking, but it means having to get the girlfriend to drop me off at Gisburn and wait for her to come pick me up.
Girlfriend has a R reg Cinquecento with 70,000 miles and its in fantastic condition and has flew through its MOT this year.
So looking for something similar, quite good at Car Mechanics anyway so fixing them is no bother.
Another thing is, i will probably be paying insurance by monthly installments so that bumps the cost up. If i had a spare 1100 to pay upfront for my insurance i would.0 -
Daft as it sounds, an older fiat is probably a better bet than the period I said, I think there was a particukly dodgy period of Fiats at a time the company struggled financially.0
-
What i like about the older ones, is they don't have all these fancy electronic gizmos. Its just a basic engine and a box.0

Get a credit card with 0% for 12 months and pay your insurance in one go with that then next year chnge creditcard companys at the end of the 12 monthsWhat if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?0 -
Crap credit history Martin mate! Got a credit card, but its got a £500 limit and 25% APR on it.0

what about the "just add fuel" options most dealers are doing now, peugoet do £180 a month and get car/insurance/tax/servicing on a 207,is £15 a month more than you paying for insurance alone.
may be a really bad idea, but helps with credit score as long as keep paying and end of 3 years, can always give back or get new one0 -
Except you need to come up with a chunk up front.I don't do smileys.

I'm looking at about the same amount for a Nissan Primera, honestly you'd be surprised what car's are attainable if you steer clear from the cars that generally end up getting stuffed or stolen. Good, solid, unpopular family cars are seriously worth a try0

I used to have a 53 plate fiat stilo 1.6 worth 3k and the insurance was £500 until it blew the dark up, my temporary P plate 1.3 fiesta costs £650 with 7 years no claims I got a quote of £22.5k lol. I have a separate policy on my mums 57 plate 1.6 Focus and that costs me £350 fully comp. What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?0 -
Tried a crappy Volvo, they wanted £3000  One thing i do know, is I'm going to be paying £1500 + due to the amount of high insurance claims in my area in the past 18 months.
Due to the stupid crash for cash claims.
You'd think being 25 I'd be considered a more safer prospect than most 17 year old drivers.0 -

You're paying more as a windfall for life in the bottom half of the table, me thinks
Trust me I know, I'm in Wolverhampton !0 -

It's probably not worth going fully comp on a cheap car. Just buy a £500 Fiesta or something like that and insure it TPF+T. Much cheaper!0 -
Now mine aint too bad, mine was £405 quid on a 57 plate Dodge Avenger until the claim got settled for the crash I had in my Jeep.
Walsall taxi driver merged from a right hand lane into the front wing of my jeep smashing in his rear quarter and door. I didnt claim as he scratched my jeep causing £30 quids worth of damage and he was adamant it was my fault, I was adamant, because it was, that it was his fault, so my insurance company said if I claimed, because there were no witnesses Id have to pay 200 quid excess to get my damage fixed. Because I didnt claim, my insurance told me not to contest his claim, let it run. It was only when I asked for details for a new insurance quote the year after I found out that he'd claimed 11.5k for crashing his R reg vectra into my jeep then claiming for injury and loss of earnings. It then went up to 600 (I'd got protected ncd thank god)0 -

Weirdly it goes up by another £700 quid for TPFT! and for TPO it wont even quote me.0 -
You're apparently more of a risk if you try and save money by going for less cover like as if we'd want to compromise the cover, in fact it's cheaper for me to park on the street than on my driveway :shock:0

My advice would be to stay away from popular little cars fiestas, 206's and the like as they are higher premiums, look at old toyota's mazda's nissans and anything that is remotely uncool like Daewoo Matiz for instance, Hyundai's.
Also (i say this all the time) it was cheaper to insure my Porsche than it was to insure my micra! :?
The Jag was the same price as the Leon, and the Leon tries to kill me most days? Uncool=cheaper0 -
My advice is to smack your beeatch around and tell her to drive you more places. Why should you have to pay money on a car 'just so she isn't hanging round Gisburn'. Grow some balls man, tell her to wait, and to have tea and cake waiting for the end of your ride!
[/CC Response]It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Oddly not in my case, an 800cc Matiz costs more than a 1600cc Nissan Primera, SI spec no less0 -

The TPF&T being more expensive than fully comp is something my sister found. Try having a massive excess, it's a risk you might have to take, if you're willing to 'bet' £750 that you won't have a crash, that says a lot to the insurance company.
Unfortunately, it's always going to be horribly expensive for the first few years, and insurance companies do wierd stuff that doesn't help. One of my mates had got a provisional license at 17, and then never bothered to learn to drive, he juts used it for ID. When he had a few lessons and tried to get put on his parents' policy so he could practise in their car at about 21, the insurance company refused. They said that he must have been trying to learn to drive for 4 years, had obviously failed as he was still on a provisional, therefore he was a dreadful driver and they wouldn't allow him on the policy :?
As for cars, something basic is a good call. I had a 106 for a while and it was fine, there was nothing to go wrong, so nothing went wrong! Got a focus now and the air con's stopped working, so that's probably going to be £lotsofhundreds to fix, but it's that or betty swollocks.0 -

This is why even though I could buy a brand new 911 I drive a 07 plate fiat panda.
Apart from servicing, fuel and insurance which is £130 per year, its cost me an amazing £47 in parts to and £200 in tyres over the last 4 years.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

Can't help with cars, but I always follow the guidelines on The Money Saving Expert site for cheap insurance.

I paid £400ish last year for fully comp on my 1.8TDi focus estate, insurers wanted £800odd this year. I shopped around and got it for £400ish again. Admittedly I've moved house and can say I park the car in the garage now, which might have helped (as if I do, that's where the bike lives!)0 -
Also, try asking a rodent like creature in a smoking jacket for his best price0
